OAKLAND, Iowa (AP) – Authorities say one person has been killed and another arrested in Oakland. Officers were sent to a home on Brown Street around 3 a.m. today (Tuesday) after someone called 911 to report that a woman had been shot. Officers later arrested a man outside the home.
Authorities also say there were children inside the home, but the children were able to get out safely. The names of those involved and other details haven’t been released.
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — A 38-foot-long recreational vehicle sponsored by the University of Iowa will soon travel Iowa promoting the state’s rich history. The Mobile Museum is expected to make its inaugural appearance in Fort Dodge this weekend, and stops in Decorah, Osage and Council Bluffs are planned. The university plans to show it off to the media Tuesday.
The Mobile Museum is sponsored by the Old Capitol Museum, Museum of Natural History and Office of the State Archaeologist. It will feature exhibits about mammals that roamed Iowa during the last ice age, the founding of Iowa, and the state’s “ancient agriculturalists” based in the Loess Hills.
UI vice president for research Dan Reed says it is a “museum built in Iowa, by Iowans, for Iowans” that will visit schools, libraries and special events.
Large numbers of law enforcement members converged on Oakland early this morning to look for a suspect believed to have been involved in an earlier incident. Details are sketchy at this time, but a perimeter was being established near 303 Brown Street, at around 3:15-a.m.
By 3:40-a.m., the incident appeared to have concluded. We’ll have additional information as it becomes available.
The Atlantic Area Chamber of Commerce has issued an alert to area businesses to be on the lookout for counterfeit $50 bills. The Chamber reports counterfeit money was submitted to a Chamber Business over the weekend as payment. The counterfeit $50 was not properly identified with a marking pen.
Officials advise businesses to be sure to check all features including:
Portrait (Should be visible when held up to any light); Paper; Serial Number; Seals; Borders Starch (Marking pen test); Paper Texture and Watermark.
If counterfeit money is submitted at your business, contact the Atlantic Police Department at 712-243-3512. Also, if you have any information regarding counterfeit money you’re asked to contact the Police Department.
Two local law enforcement officers are going to find out how wet and cold they get this afternoon. Atlantic Police Chief Steve Green and Cass County Sheriff Darby McLaren are going to be taking a dip into a lake at the Schildberg Recreation Area this afternoon, beginning at 3 o’clock. The effort is one of many similar attempts nationwide to raise money for the family of 5-month old Landon Shaw, of Tarkio, MO.
Green says he’s seen the various videos on social media with regard to the “Plunge for Landon,” but he noticed something was lacking. He says “Noticed that about 80% of the posts” he’s seen are emergency services workers, but few administrators such as Chiefs of Police, Sheriffs and Councilpersons taking the challenge. McLaren accepted his challenge as did Atlantic City Councilman Chris Jimerson. Green says if they can raise enough money before the plunge, they’ll be decked out for the challenge.
He says if they can raise $300 by 3-pm, they’ll wear their uniforms, minus the expensive equipment such as radios and weapons. You can donate by stopping by the Atlantic Police or Cass County Sheriff’s Departments, or by calling the P-D and making your pledge to donate. He says donations of any amount will be appreciated. Green says the case of a family such as Landon’s being socked with mounting medical bills and travel expensed in the fight against cancer, is something he can relate to, and that’s why he’s stepping up to help them out.
Any funds raised will be sent to the family Wednesday afternoon. This past weekend, several area law enforcement members and firefighters held separate “Plunge for Landon” events to raise funds for the baby and his family.
