Up next the Hawkeyes head to the Twin Cities for the NCAA Championships in two weeks.

PISCATAWAY, New Jersey – The top-ranked University of Iowa wrestling team won the 2020 Big Ten Championship on Sunday, scoring 157.5 team points and crowning three individual champions.

Alex Marinelli defended his 165-pound conference title, and Spencer Lee and Pat Lugo became first time champions, leading Iowa to its first outright team title since 2010 and its 36th conference title overall.

NOTABLES

  • Spencer Lee was named Big Ten Conference Wrestler of the Year
  • Tom Brands was named Big Ten Conference Coach of the Year. It is the fourth time he has won the award (2008, 2009, 2010, 2020).
  • Iowa’s team title is the 36th in program history, best in the Big Ten.
  • Iowa’s point total (157.5) is its highest since 1995 (185).
  • Lee became the 114th wrestler in school history to win a Big Ten Conference title.  
  • Lugo became the 115th wrestler in school history to win a Big Ten Conference title.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) — Ayo Dosunmu scored 17 points and No. 23 Illinois held off No. 18 Iowa 78-76 to secure the No. 4 seed in the Big Ten Conference tournament. Andres Feliz scored 14 points, Kofi Cockburn had 12 and Kipper Nichols added 10 for Illinois. Luka Garza scored a game-high 28 points for Iowa, which finished in a four-way tie for fifth in the Big Ten and will be the No. 5 seed in the tournament. Joe Toussaint scored 14 and Connor McCaffery added 10. Illinois built a 17-point lead late in the game that evaporated to two points in the final seconds.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Ashley Joens scored 15 points, including the decisive free throw with 0.9 second left, to help Iowa State stun No. 2 Baylor 57-56, ending the Lady Bears’ 58-game regular-season Big 12 winning streak on Sunday. The Lady Bears (28-2, 17-1 Big !2) last lost a conference regular season game to Texas on Feb. 6, 2017. Their only other loss this season came to South Carolina in November in a Thanksgiving tournament. Iowa State (18-11, 10-8) took a 56-53 lead on Joens’ layup with 37 seconds left. Juicy Landrum tied the game 14 seconds later with a 3-pointer.

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — Erik Stevenson scored 18 points with nine rebounds and Wichita State beat Tulsa 79-57 to end American Athletic Conference play. The Shockers are the fourth seed to the conference’s post-season tournament, which starts Thursday in Fort Worth, Texas. Wichita State gets a first-round bye and will play in the quarterfinals Friday against the winner of No. 5 UConn and 12th-seed Tulane. Martins Igbanu had 20 points for the Golden Hurricane. Tulsa – which also gets an opening-round bye – heads to the tournament as the No. 3 seed. The Golden Hurricane face the winner between sixth-seeded Memphis and No. 11 seed East Carolina.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Gabe Kalscheur scored 26 points and Alihan Demir added 19 points and 10 rebounds as Minnesota set a season-high in scoring with a 107-75 victory over Nebraska. Marcus Carr had 18 points and 11 assists, while Daniel Oturu added 10 points and six rebounds for the Gophers, who made a school-record 18 3-pointers. Haanif Cheatham led the Huskers with 17 points. Jervay Green added 16, Thorir Thorbjarnarson had 14, and Kevin Cross scored 10.

IRVING, Texas (AP) — Kansas center Udoka Azubuike has been selected as the Big 12 player of the year by the league’s coaches. Baylor’s Scott Drew was named coach of the year in the voting by his conference peers. The Big 12 awards were announced Sunday, the day after the end of the regular season. Azubuike is averaging 13.7 points and 10.5 rebounds a game. The 7-footer is also shooting an NCAA-best 74.8% from the field for the regular-season champion Jayhawks. Big 12 runner-up Baylor is 26-4 and spent five weeks as the nation’s No. 1 team. The Bears also set a Big 12 record with 23 wins in a row.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Bradley guard Darrell Brown, motivated by a perceived first-team all-conference snub, scored 21 points to lead the Braves to an 80-66 win over Valparaiso in the championship game of the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament. The Braves have won eight of their last 10 and captured back-to-back MVC tournament crowns for the first time in school history. Javon Freeman-Liberty paced Valparaiso with 24 points and 10 rebounds. Bradley is making its 10th trip to the NCAA Tournament.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — Max Abmas scored 20 points as Oral Roberts romped past cold-shooting Omaha 79-52 in the quarterfinals of the Summit League tournament. Deondre Burns had 17 points and six assists for No 4. seed Oral Roberts. Kevin Obanor added 13 points and 11 rebounds. Emmanuel Nzekwesi had 13 points and nine rebounds. Omaha was 27% shooting from the field (16 of 59), the lowest percentage against Oral Roberts this season. KJ Robinson had 15 points to lead the fifth-seeded Mavericks.

MANHATTAN, Kansas (AP) — Xavier Sneed scored 31 points, went 10-of-21 from the field and hit four 3’s as Kansas State defeated Iowa State 79-63, winning for the first time since January 29 to end a 10-game losing skid. Kansas State led by as many as 26 in the win. Solomon Young scored 17 for Iowa State, which has lost five of its last six games.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Darrell Brown scored 25 points to lead five in double-figure scoring as No. 4 seed Bradley beat eighth-seeded Drake 76-66 to advance to a second straight Missouri Valley Conference tournament championship. Liam Robbins scored 19 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead Drake. Bradley never trailed after the opening minute. The Bulldogs pulled to 52-49, but the Braves answered with a 7-0 spurt. Drake cut the deficit to six points in the final five minutes but didn’t get closer. Bradley will Valparaiso in the conference championship.

LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) — No. 1 Kansas is the outright Big 12 champion and the league’s first in a decade with only one loss in conference play. The Jayhawks wrapped up the regular season with a 66-62 victory at Texas Tech. Udoka Azubuike had 15 points and 11 rebounds, including his putback dunk with 1:41 left that put Kansas ahead to stay. Devon Dotson had 17 points for Kansas, which is 28-3 overall and 17-1 in the Big 12. Texas Tech was the national runner-up last season. The Red Raiders are 18-13 with four losses in a row.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Marcus Zegarowski made all five of his 3-pointers and finished with 23 points to lead No. 11 Creighton to a share of the Big East regular-season title with a 77-60 victory over No. 8 Seton Hall. The Bluejays claimed all or part of their first conference title since winning the Missouri Valley outright in 2012-13. Creighton has won 11 of its last 13 games and because it swept the season series against the Pirates will be the No. 1 seed in the Big East Tournament in New York next week. Myles Powell and Quincy McKnight scored 15 apiece for the Pirates.

COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) — Dru Smith scored 17 points to lead Missouri to a 69-50 victory over Alabama in the regular-season finale for both teams. Mark Smith scored 13 points for the Tigers (15-16, 7-11 Southeastern Conference), Mitchell Smith added 10 points on 4-of-4 shooting from the field and Jeremiah Tilmon finished with eight points and nine rebounds. Missouri slowed the pace to its liking and held Alabama 33 points under its season scoring average. Kira Lewis Jr. led the Crimson Tide (16-15, 8-10) with 18 points, Jaden Shackelford scored 13 and George Smith added 10.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Javon Freeman-Liberty scored 29 points with nine rebounds and five assists and Valparaiso beat Missouri State 89-82 to advance to the championship game of the Missouri Valley Conference. The No. 7 seed Crusaders beat 10th-seed Evansville Thursday and upset No. 2 seed Loyola Chicago on Friday. Valpo faces No. 4 seed Bradley on Sunday. Freeman-Liberty’s jump shot with 12:50 left extended Valpo’s lead to 61-48 and they maintained safe distance until Keandre Cook’s 3 with 21 seconds left reduced the Bears’ deficit to 85-82. Ben Krikke sank to foul shots a couple of seconds later to seal the win. Keandre Cook led the Bears with 26 points.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) — Abby Hipp scored 16 points with eight rebounds off the bench and Jasmine Franklin scored 13 and No. 23-ranked Missouri State beat Loyola Chicago 72-61. Brice Calip scored 10 for the Bears, which closed Missouri Valley Conference play with 12 wins in their last 13 games. Hipp closed the third quarter with a three-point play for a 49-44 lead. Calip’s jumper with 7:23 left broke a tie at 51 and Missouri State gradually pulled away. Tiara Wallace led Loyola Chicago with 22 points and Day scored 20 on 9-of-11 shooting.

JUPITER, Fla. (AP) — Paul DeJong is proving he can be the answer to one of the Cardinals most pressing spring training questions. At the midpoint of spring ball, DeJong’s bat is allowing St. Louis to forget about the lineup void created by the loss of Marcel Ozuna to free agency. DeJong’s four homers entering Saturday’s game against Houston were tied for the Grapefruit League lead. The Cardinals’ cleanup hitter in every game he started last season, Ozuna hit 29 homers while driving in 89 runs in 129 games.

DeJong emerging in Cardinals cleanup role: Cards beat Astros 5-1

JUPITER, Fla. (AP) — Paul DeJong is proving he can be the answer to one of the Cardinals most pressing spring training questions. At the midpoint of spring ball, DeJong’s bat is allowing St. Louis to forget about the lineup void created by the loss of Marcel Ozuna to free agency. DeJong’s four homers entering Saturday’s game against Houston were tied for the Grapefruit League lead. The Cards won 5-to 1.

The Cardinals’ cleanup hitter in every game he started last season, Ozuna hit 29 homers while driving in 89 runs in 129 games.
