Three Marines, including an Iowan, killed in Afghanistan

An Iowan was among three Marines killed in Afghanistan late last week. The Department of Defense announced today that the three Marines died last Friday while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, located in southern Afghanistan. An Iowan, Lance Corporal Adam Wolff, was among those killed. The 25-year-old Wolff was from Cedar Rapids. The other Marines were from 34-year-old Staff Sgt. David Stewart of Stafford, Virginia; 19-year-old Lance Cpl. Brandon Garabrant of Peterborough, New Hampshire. All three Marines were assigned to the 2nd Combat Engineer Battalion (Forward) in the 2nd Marine Division, a unit based at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. Details about exactly how the Marines died have not been released. Stewart most recently deployed to Afghanistan in April, while Garabrant and Wolff deployed in March.

DORIS ELAINE ST. PETER, 95, of Guthrie Center died Saturday, June 21st at the New Homestead in Guthrie Center.  Funeral services for DORIS ELAINE ST. PETER will be held on Wednesday, June 25th at 10:00 am in the First Christian Church in Guthrie Center.  Twigg Funeral Home in Guthrie Center has the arrangements.

Driver arrested in Iowa after fatal Omaha crash

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The driver of a sport utility vehicle suspected of fleeing a fatal Omaha collision with a motorcycle has been arrested across the Missouri River in Iowa. Authorities say the accident occurred early Monday morning near Omaha’s 30th Street exit off Interstate 480. Officers suspect the SUV was going east in the westbound lanes when it struck the motorcycle. The motorcycle driver was pronounced dead later at Nebraska Medical Center.

The SUV driver was found later at a hotel near the Ameristar Casino in Council Bluffs, Iowa, and taken into custody. The names of those involved haven’t been released.

Atlantic School Board to hold Work Session

The Atlantic Community School District’s Board of Education will hold a work session Monday evening, at the High School. The 7:30-p.m. session takes place in the Media Center, and features action on: Approval of new hires; a tuckpointing bid for the Atlantic Middle School, and the Fiscal Year 2014-2015 Audit, as presented by a representative from Nolte, Cornman & Johnson, P.C.

The Board will also work on the development of a next year’s evaluation of Superintendent Mike Amstein, followed by a closed session for an informal evaluation of Amstein’s performance.
