GOP’s Ernst of Iowa to give party’s radio address

News

July 11th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – Iowa Senate candidate Joni Ernst will take a break from campaigning for two weeks to take part in active duty training for the Iowa National Guard. But before lacing up her boots, Ernst has recorded the Republicans’ national radio address.

The Republican National Committee confirms that Ernst recorded the speech Thursday evening just hours before she was scheduled to report for duty. Ernst is a lieutenant colonel and will not campaign for two weeks while she leads an Iowa transportation battalion on its annual active duty training at Fort McCoy, Wisconsin. The address airs Saturday morning.

Ernst is an Iowa state senator who won a five-way primary last month. She faces Democratic Rep. Bruce Braley for the seat being vacated by five-term Democratic Sen. Tom Harkin, who is retiring.

Polar vortex? Nope, just cooler Midwestern temps

News, Weather

July 11th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

CHICAGO (AP) – Unseasonably cool temperatures will arrive next week in the Midwest and as far south as Arkansas and Oklahoma. It is not, however, the second coming of a polar vortex, something the National Weather Service says it regrets tweeting earlier this week.

Weather Underground meteorology director Jeff Masters says the weather pattern is similar to those dreaded words, but the key difference is that the chilly air mass isn’t coming directly from the arctic.

Masters says that Typhoon Neoguri in Japan altered the path of the jet stream and allowed polar air to spill out of Canada. That means next week’s temperatures will be as much as 15 degrees cooler than normal in the Midwest and could reach 90 in the normally temperate Pacific Northwest.

Lawmaker seeks change in open enrollment law for student athletes

A Warren County legislator says he’ll try again next year to give students new privileges who switch schools in order to get away from a bully. Representative Scott Ourth started championing the idea after hearing about a 15-year-old wrestler whose older teammates verbally and physically abused him. Under Iowa’s open enrollment law, students can transfer to a neighboring school district, but they can’t play sports right away.  “He either has to quit the sport he likes to avoid being bullied in the wrestling room or he has to change school districts and be punished once again by not being able to pursue this sport,” Ourth says.

Ourth, who is a Democrat from Ackworth, is not identifying the school district or the name of the student. “All he’s trying to do is protect himself from this egregious behavior and every single time we say no to a person like that, we’re handing a victory to the bullies,” Ourth says. Ourth spoke about the issue this week before the legislature’s Administrative Rules Review Committee.

Some members of the committee said they support the open enrollment law as written, to prevent kids from cherry-picking schools just to play sports.

A family-owned Dutch company that makes front-end attachments for tractors has opened its first U-S distribution center — in northeast Iowa. Zuidberg (ZUD-berg) North America has been in business since 1982 building custom-designed hitches in the Netherlands. Company president Rudolf de Jong (dee YUNG) says it will start out small in Cedar Falls but there are plans to expand.  “Our goal is to grow to between 20 and 30-percent per year,” de Jong says. “That means that after three to four years, we hope to employ up to 50 people.” According to de Jong, Zuidberg makes equipment being sold to customers in 45 countries which allows several types of implements to be attached to the front of tractors instead of the rear.

He says, “We sell directly to tractor manufacturers, farm equipment manufacturers and to tractor dealerships all around the country.” The implements allow farmers to mow with equipment on both the front and the back of their tractors. He says it’s more efficient and it also increases the farmers’ comfort because they can face forward instead of constantly turning from side to side.
