DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – Republican David Young has less than $90,000 in the bank for his run in Iowa’s 3rd Congressional District. Young’s campaign spokesman said Monday night that Young had raised just over $110,000 during the most recent reporting period, which ended June 30. He has nearly $90,000 in cash. That’s far less than his Democratic opponent Staci Appel, who said last week that she had more than $725,000 on hand.

Young, a former chief of staff for Republican Sen. Chuck Grassley, and Appel, a former state lawmaker, are vying to replace retiring Republican congressman Tom Latham. Campaign finance reports are due Tuesday to the Federal Election Commission. The 3rd District covers much of southwest Iowa, stretching from Des Moines to Council Bluffs.

Sen. Grassley working to find solution to illegal immigrant situation

News

July 15th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley says he’s working out a plan with colleagues from both parties that would see a relatively quick end to the situation involving thousands of children from Central America who are illegally crossing the border into the U-S. Governor Branstad says he does not want the federal government sending any of the children to Iowa and Grassley says with fast action, that may not become an issue.

“The next step needs to be two things,” Grassley says. “One, the immediate thing, to take care of some immediate humanitarian needs that are out there for the kids, and the second one is, to change the law so that they can be sent back to their country.” Grassley, a Republican, is scheduled to attend a hearing on the border situation tomorrow (Wednesday) that includes ranking officials with Homeland Security, Health and Human Services and the U-S Attorney General’s office.

“I’m working with a group of senators that develop these solutions that I just talked about but to develop solutions that can also garner bipartisan support,” Grassley says. “In fact, we’ll be having a meeting this afternoon, other than the briefing you’re talking about, among those senators with the leaders to see what we can come up with.” Deportation of the children is scheduled to begin later this week, starting with those being housed in New Mexico. Reports say more than 57-thousand undocumented, unaccompanied children have crossed the U-S border with Mexico since October.

ISU Extension and Outreach to hold 2014 farm land valuation and leasing meetings

Ag/Outdoor

July 15th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

Iowa is enjoying a near “normal” growing season this year and crop conditions are conducive to a bountiful crop. Before this year’s crop is even out of the field many farmland owners and tenants will be discussing next year’s rental rate and leasing agreements. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach works to bring unbiased information to both land owners and renters to help both parties make successful management decisions.

The land valuation and leasing meetings discuss current land values, rental rates, trends and projections of how values and rents might change in the coming years. Other topics will include: how to calculate a rental rate based on county specific information, the variety of leasing arrangements that land owners and tenants may use, and the expected cost of crop production in the coming year.

There will be a leasing meeting held on July 29th at 9:00 am in Harlan, Iowa, at the Shelby County Extension Office, located at 906 Sixth Street. The cost is $20/person pre-registered, or $25/person without pre-registration. Attendees will receive a land leasing handbook with reference and resource materials. The workshop will last approximately 2 ½ hours.

Shane Ellis, ISU farm management specialist for the west central region of the state will be presenting. To register, please call the Shelby County Extension office at 712-755-3104.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) – Iowa basketball player Peter Jok was arrested Monday night for driving his moped on a revoked license. It’s the second moped-related arrest in three months for Jok, who will be a sophomore for the Hawkeyes next fall. Jok was charged with drunk driving on his moped in late April and had his license revoked. He pleaded guilty on May 2 and completed a weekend drunk driving program, according to online court records.

Iowa City police arrested Jok again on Monday night after initially stopping him for improper rear lights and the lack of a safety flag. Jok, a 6-foot-6 shooting guard, averaged 4.4 points a game for the Hawkeyes last season.
