DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — First Lady Michelle Obama will appear in Des Moines Friday to campaign for Democratic Senate candidate Bruce Braley. A Braley campaign spokesman Jeff Giertz said yesterday that Obama and Braley will attend a rally at Drake University Friday afternoon. Braley, a four-term congressman from Waterloo, is locked a tight race against Republican Joni Ernst, a state lawmaker and officer in the Iowa National Guard from Red Oak.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa Governor Terry Branstad is spending some of his overflowing campaign money on Illinois television, with the hope of carrying remote Lee County, one of two counties that have eluded the governor in his long career. The 67-year-old Republican seeking a sixth term acknowledges it is not a cost-effective move but hopes to highlight how the county’s economy has rebounded since his 2010 election.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — An Iowa family is fighting the Des Moines school district’s refusal to enroll the Rwandan immigrant they are caring for because of questions about his immigration status. The district’s lawyer, Andrew Bracken, tells the Des Moines Register it appears that 16-year-old Habibu Moise Habienza’s legal residence remains with his family in Rwanda, so Des Moines won’t enroll him.

WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) — An Iowa county is suing a landowner to collect more than $1 million in unpaid taxes. The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier reports Black Hawk County filed the lawsuit against J.L. Watts Company in August over $1.048 million in unpaid property taxes.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — Colin Kaepernick threw for 201 yards and a touchdown, Frank Gore ran for 107 yards and the San Francisco 49ers converted a fake punt to beat the Kansas City Chiefs 22-17 on Sunday. The 49ers (3-2) turned to a trick play on fourth-and-1 from their own 29 early in the fourth quarter, giving a direct snap to Craig Dahl for a 3-yard run up the middle. Kaepernick directed the offense down field, and Phil Dawson kicked a 27-yard field goal with 8:42 to play for the go-ahead score.

Dawson also connected from 55, 52, 35 and 30 yards. The 49ers held off former franchise quarterback Alex Smith and the Chiefs (2-3) twice in the closing moments. Smith threw for 175 yards and two touchdowns, but Perrish Cox intercepted his overthrown pass to end any chance Kansas City had to rally.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Matt Kemp hit a go-ahead home run leading off the eighth inning, lifting the Los Angeles Dodgers over the St. Louis Cardinals 3-2 Saturday night and evening their NL Division Series at a game apiece. Kemp practically skipped down the first base line, appearing to coax the ball fair as it sailed inside the foul pole and into the lower left field seats while the crowd of 54,599 erupted in cheers. Bubbles percolated into the hot night air from a machine in the dugout that the Dodgers turn on to celebrate homers.

No one looked happier greeting Kemp in the dugout than J.P. Howell, who had served up a tying, two-run homer to Matt Carpenter in the top of the inning after relieving Zack Greinke. Kemp hugged Howell after connecting off Pat Neshek.

Game 3 is Monday night in St. Louis, with John Lackey starting for the Cardinals against Hyun-Jin Ryu.
