IHSAA and IGHSAU release guidance for baseball and softball season protocols

Sports

May 26th, 2020 by admin

The Iowa High School Athletic Association and the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union have released guidance procedures and provided a frequently asked questions list for the upcoming baseball and softball shortened seasons. The organizations stated that it will be the decision of each local school district to determine if they can safely conduct a baseball and/or softball season.  If it is determined that a season can be safely conducted, it will be the responsibility of the home team to provide proper administrative supervision (not the baseball coach) at contests to assure compliance with the guidelines set forth by the Governor’s office, the Department of Education, the Department of Public Health, the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union and the Iowa High School Athletic Association are being followed.

Schools have until June 8th to submit a correspondence signed by their Superintendent if they are NOT going to sponsor a baseball or softball team for this summer season.

ISU men’s hoops signs DePaul transfer Jalen Coleman-Lands

Sports

May 26th, 2020 by admin

AMES, Iowa – DePaul graduate transfer Jalen Coleman-Lands, who averaged 11.1 points last season and has made 235 career 3-pointers, has signed with Iowa State, head coach Steve Prohm announced Tuesday. Coleman-Lands will be eligible to play the 2020-21 season pending his graduation from DePaul.

Coleman-Lands, a 6-4 guard from Indianapolis, Indiana, began his career at Illinois, where he led the team in three-pointers made in each of his two seasons. He was granted a sixth year by the NCAA in early April after sitting out the 2017-18 season as a transfer and then being limited to just nine games in 2018-19 due to a broken hand.

“We are excited to bring Jalen into our program,” Prohm said. “Being from the Midwest, he is a player we’ve been familiar with for a while. He will bring immediate experience, leadership and scoring to the perimeter that we needed for this season. We are looking for Jalen to make a big impact on both ends of the floor.”

Last season, Coleman-Lands started all 32 games for the Blue Demons. He hit 63 3-pointers, ranking 11th in the BIG EAST with 2.0 makes per game, and reached double figures in 20 games.

He had some of his best outings against the best competition DePaul faced, tallying 17 points against Villanova and Iowa, as well as 18 points against Texas Tech. Coleman-Lands scored a season-high 21 points against Central Michigan, connecting on 6-of-12 3-pointers.

Coleman-Lands will provide valuable experience on the perimeter for the 2020-21 Iowa State team. In his career, Coleman-Lands has played in 110 games, making 80 starts.

He has scored 1,072 career points and made 235 3-pointers at a 36.4 percent clip. He enters his senior season ranked among the nation’s top-10 active players for three-pointers made.

Coleman-Lands is a career 79.9 percent free throw shooter, connecting on better than 80 percent of his attempts last season for the Blue Demons.

Coleman-Lands was a prep star at renowned La Lumiere School (Ind.), where he was a consensus top-50 recruit and played in the 2015 Jordan Brand Classic.

He is the second transfer addition of the spring for the Cyclones, joining guard Tyler Harris who comes from Memphis.

ISU AD Pollard issues letter to fans on football intentions

Sports

May 26th, 2020 by admin

Iowa State Athletic Director Jamie Pollard released a letter to fans on Tuesday outlining the university’s plans in regard to the football season this fall. The letter outlines current thoughts on fans attending games and policy on season tickets for this year and next. Read the full letter below.

May 26, 2020

Dear Cyclone fans,

Greetings! It seems like forever since we have been together as a Cyclone family, and we cannot wait to have that opportunity again in the very near future.

Many of you have reached out recently with positive messages, words of encouragement, and questions about what lies ahead. The most-often asked questions have been “do you think we will play football this fall and will fans be allowed to attend the games?” The purpose of this letter is to begin to answer those questions.

First, we fully anticipate playing football this fall. In order to do that, we have to overcome several initial hurdles (i.e., getting the players safely back on campus, officially starting team activities, conducting preseason practice, etc.) before we can truly start to assess this fall’s season. As of today, we fully anticipate playing football in Jack Trice Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 5.

The second question is more challenging to answer. Attendance at Jack Trice Stadium would be limited to approximately 50% capacity in order to meet the current guidelines established by state and local officials. Those guidelines may be adjusted as time passes. Right now, we are planning as though the capacity of our stadium would be limited to 30,000 spectators.

As of today, approximately 22,000 season tickets have been renewed for this fall. That leaves us approximately 8,000 seats to be filled. Because we need to make plans to accommodate those fans who will be allowed into the stadium (based on state and local guidelines), we have decided to implement the following:

  1. Any fan who does not renew their season tickets and make their Cyclone Club donation by June 12, 2020 will not be provided the opportunity to attend any games this fall unless it is later decided that we can safely exceed the 50% capacity restriction.
  2. The only fans who will have the opportunity to be in the stadium this fall are those who renew their season tickets and their required Cyclone Club donation (if applicable) by June 12, 2020. If you have not done so already, please contact our staff ASAP to complete those processes.
  3. Because we expect to reach the 50% capacity limitation through season ticket sales, we do not anticipate selling single-game tickets unless the capacity limits are raised.
  4. Any season ticket holder who does not renew their season tickets for 2020 will continue to have first rights on their same seats for 2021. We believe it is very important to honor prior loyalty, as there may be some fans who are not comfortable attending games this fall or are experiencing financial challenges.
  5. Any season ticket holder who renews their season tickets but later decides they are not comfortable attending games this fall because of COVID-19 may request a refund of their season ticket purchase or defer the purchase of their season ticket to the 2021 season.

Lastly, we want to assure you that our staff is working to make the game day environment as safe as possible. After consulting with campus officials, we have concluded there is no reasonable way to guarantee that no one will contract the COVID-19 virus. Trying to adhere to a standard of absolute protection is simply not reasonable. We would either be held accountable for being far too restrictive or, more likely, not restrictive enough.

We will establish, and eventually communicate to you, the mitigation measures that we will implement this fall. Those decisions are currently in the development stage and will be evaluated and tweaked as we learn more about the virus in the coming weeks. It will ultimately be up to each attendee to decide whether they are comfortable attending games given the mitigation strategies, we will implement. That decision will remain a personal choice that all attendees need to make.

We hope this helps better explain our plans for moving forward with the football season this fall. Thank you for your continued support.

Go Cyclones!

WASHINGTON (AP) — Patrick Ewing’s son says the Georgetown basketball coach and former NBA great has been released from the hospital and is recovering from COVID-19 at home. The 57-year-old Hall of Famer who played for the Hoyas in college and the New York Knicks for 15 seasons said Friday that he had tested positive for the coronavirus and was being treated at a hospital. Patrick Ewing Jr. tweeted that his father was getting better and thanked the doctors and nurses who looked after him during his hospital stay.

TORONTO (AP) — The NHL is hoping to move to Phase 2 of its return-to-play protocol early next month. That includes opening practice facilities and allowing small group workouts. Six players will be allowed in team facilities at one time for the voluntary workouts. No on-ice coaching or instruction is permitted. A 22-page memo detailing the plan stresses there’s no exact date for the start of Phase 2 or a timetable for how long it will last. The NHL season was paused March 12 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Denny Hamlin’s team does not plan to appeal a suspension that happened because a piece of tungsten fell off his car on the pace lap before the Coca-Cola 600. The tungsten is required to meet minimum weight requirements on the car and the NASCAR rule book states if it is separated at any point it is an automatic four-race suspension for the crew chief, car chief and engineer. Chris Gabehart, the crew chief, was suspended through June 10 along with car chief Brandon Griffeth and engineer Scott Simmons.

TOKYO (AP) — Japan’s professional baseball season will open on June 19 under a plan that excludes fans. The league made the announcement Monday after an online meeting with representatives of the league’s 12 teams. The announcement came as the state of emergency was lifted in Tokyo and on the northern island of Hokkaido by Japan’s prime minister. The state of emergency was lifted earlier this month for other parts of the country. Teams can begin practice games on June 2.

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — The Korean Baseball Organization has suspended ex-Pittsburgh Pirates infielder Jung Ho Kang for a year and ordered him to perform 300 hours of community service over a series of historical drunk driving cases. The KBO says the suspension will come into effect when Kang signs a contract with a South Korean club. He applied to come off the voluntarily retired list last week in a bid to return to the league. The 33-year-old Kang didn’t attend Monday’s disciplinary committee hearing but did issue an apology through his lawyer.

CONCORD, N.C. (AP) — Brad Keselowski extended Jimmie Johnson’s losing streak to 102 races, holding off the seven-time NASCAR champion in overtime early Monday in the Coca-Cola 600. Keselowski started in the back of the field, worked his way to the front at Charlotte Motor Speedway and gambled in not pitting when caution stopped Chase Elliott from winning with two laps remaining.

UNDATED (AP) — Tiger Woods and Peyton Manning won “The Match: Champions for Charity,” earning a 1-up decision over Phil Mickelson and Tom Brady. Woods and Manning took the lead on the third hole and never trailed, building a 3-up lead in fourballs on the front nine and closing it out on 18. The goal was to raise $10 million or more for COVID-19 relief funds, and online donations sent money climbing toward about twice that much.

UNDATED (AP) — Hall of Fame basketball coach Eddie Sutton has died of natural causes at 84, according to his family. Sutton led Kentucky, Arkansas and Oklahoma State to the Final Four and was the first coach to take four schools to the NCAA tournament. He was 806-328 in 37 seasons as a Division I head coach, not counting vacated victories or forfeited games. He was Associated Press Coach of the Year in 1978 at Arkansas and in 1986 at Kentucky.

UNDATED (AP) — New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo says teams in his state can return to their facilities for training after a pause of more than two months. The New York City area was one of the hardest-hit parts of the U.S. by the coronavirus pandemic, but COVID-19 deaths and new infections in the state have been trending downward. Major League Baseball, the NBA and the NHL are discussing the resumption of their seasons with their players’ unions.

UNDATED (AP) — The president of the Spanish soccer league says its schedule could restart as early as June 11 with the Seville derby between Sevilla and Real Betis. The announcement comes a day after Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said that the league would be allowed to resume from June 8 provided the country continued to keep the coronavirus outbreak in check. Teams will be allowed to train with groups of 14 players beginning Monday, up from 10 players the past week.
