…CONDITIONS ARE FAVORABLE FOR FUNNEL CLOUDS...

CURRENT ATMOSPHERIC CONDITIONS SUPPORT THE DEVELOPMENT OF FUNNEL CLOUDS. USUALLY…THESE FUNNEL CLOUDS CAN FORM FROM SHOWERS AND WEAK THUNDERSTORMS. THESE FUNNELS ARE NORMALLY BRIEF…DROP ONLY A FEW HUNDRED FEET FROM THE CLOUD BASE…AND RARELY BECOME A TORNADO OR CAUSE DAMAGE. HOWEVER…IF ONE IS SPOTTED…PLEASE IMMEDIATELY REPORT IT TO THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE. IF A TORNADO WARNING WOULD BECOME NECESSARY…TAKE APPROPRIATE ACTION.

Man who reported body in car found in Iowa

News

August 9th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska law enforcement officials say they have found a man who told employees of a west Omaha hospital that he had a body in his car. The Douglas County Sheriff’s Department says the 50-year-old man was stopped in western Iowa shortly after the incident Friday morning at Methodist Women’s Hospital emergency room.

Hospital staff say the man walked in around 9 a.m. and told them he had a body in his car. Employees said they found no body or blood in the car, even though the man insisted the body was there. The man then drove off.

Sheriff’s officials say the man’s cellphone information was used to find him. No body or evidence of foul play was found in his car. The man was not arrested, but the investigation continues.

Iowa lakes deemed safe following fish kills

Ag/Outdoor, News

August 9th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

SPIRIT LAKE, Iowa (AP) — Iowa officials say two northwest Iowa lakes have been found to be safe for swimming and boating after fish kills were discovered there earlier this week. The Sioux City Journal reports that dead freshwater drum, a species of fish, washed up on the northwest shore of East Lake Okoboji on Thursday. Fisheries biologist Mike Hawkins with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources says thousands of small fish also washed up on a one-mile portion of Big Spirit Lake the same day.

Hawkins says the kills are not connected. He says the drum were most likely killed by disease spread through overpopulation. He says the small fish died from a pocket of low oxygen on Big Spirit Lake.
