State Fair Cookout Champion Crowned Tuesday

A Center Point man was named winner of the 2014, 51st Annual Iowa Farm Bureau Cookout Contest, Tuesday. The event was held at the Iowa State Fair, in Des Moines. Phil Cummings, of Center Point received his crown for his award-winning Mediterranean Lamb Pops entry, which beat out 50 other grillers representing counties from around the state.Cookout Champion Photo

The Iowa Farm Bureau-sponsored contest featured outdoor chefs, with varying levels of experience, using their best grilling, roasting and smoking techniques to impress the judges. Cookout Contest champion, Cummings, won first place in the lamb category before being selected by the judges as the overall winner. He received $200, a crown, and a permanent trophy as the 2014 Iowa Farm Bureau Cookout Contest Champion.

Second place winners and their categories, included: Randy Stamper of Greenfield, beef; Elsie Schafer of Mt. Ayr, poultry; and Mark Kunkle of Guthrie Center, combo/specialty. All second–place finishers received $100.

Second place in the Youth category award during the cook-off, went to Elsie Schafer of Mt. Ayr. Schafer won $100 for her efforts. Youth prizes were donated by the Iowa Propane Association.

Deere 3Q profit falls as equipment sales decline

MOLINE, Ill. (AP) – Deere’s third-quarter profit fell 15 percent and the farming equipment maker thinks the same weak sales in the U.S., Canada and abroad will cut into earnings for the year. The farming equipment maker earned $850.7 million, or $2.33 per share, which beat expectations of $2.20 per share, according to a poll by FactSet. A year earlier the Moline company earned $996.5 million, or $2.56 per share.

Revenue from equipment sales fell to $8.72 billion from $9.32 billion. Total sales and revenues, which includes financial services and other revenues, declined to $9.5 billion from $10.01 billion. Wall Street predicted revenue of $8.71 billion. Equipment sales for the U.S. and Canada dropped 8 percent.

Deere & Co.’s expects a 2014 profit of $3.1 billion, down slightly from forecasts in given this spring.

Car crashes into Guthrie Center cafe

No injuries were reported after a car experienced an apparent mechanical failure and hit a restaurant last Friday morning, in Guthrie Center. The Iowa State Patrol reports 73-year old Donna Marie Vokes, of Panora, was driving a 2009 Toyota northbound in the parking lot of the Hilltop Cafe at 2003 State Street, when her accelerator became stuck. Vokes was unable to stop her car before it hit the south side of the building at around 9:15-a.m., causing about $2,500 damage to the building and some equipment inside the cafe.

Vokes’ car also sustained $2,500 damage. No citations were issued.

ROSE ANN THOMSSEN, 76, of Manilla, died Tue., Aug. 12th, at the Crawford County Hospital. Funeral services for ROSE ANN THOMSSEN will be held 10:30-a.m. Sat., Aug. 16th, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Manilla. Ohde Funeral Home in Manilla has the arrangements.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 5-p.m. Friday (8/15), and at Trinity Lutheran Church on Saturday, from 9:30-a.m. until the time of service.

Burial will be in the Nishnabotna Cemetery near Manilla.

ROSE ANN THOMSSEN is survived by:

Her son – Brent Thomssen, of Manilla.

Her daughters – Yvonne Klindt, of Manilla, & Lisa Sample, of Denison.

Her brother – Darell Stegemann, of Manilla.

Her sister – Beth Cates, of Carroll.

8 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.

Villisca man arrested on assault charge Tuesday evening

Officials in Montgomery County say one person was arrested Tuesday evening on an assault charge. 22-year old Jamie Paul McDaniel, of Villisca, was taken into custody at around 5:45-p.m. at the Montgomery County Jail. McDaniel was arrested on a valid Montgomery County warrant charging him with Simple Assault. The man posted a $300 cash bond and was released from custody.

Teen dies in Sac County crash on Hwy 71, Tuesday

EARLY, Iowa (AP) – The Iowa State Patrol says a teenager from Sac County has been killed in a head-on car crash with a recreational vehicle.  The patrol reports the crash occurred Tuesday on Highway 71, south of Early. Authorities say 16-year-old Coral Isle Deal, of Early,  died after driving off the road and then overcorrecting. They say the teen’s Pontiac Vibe crossed the center line and hit a Fleetwood RV driven by a 71-year-old Texas man.

The car was crushed under the RV’s front wheels. The man wasn’t injured. The patrol is investigating.
