The Atlantic Police Dept. reports one person suffered minor injuries during a three vehicle, chain reaction accident in Atlantic, Monday night. Officials say at around 5:45-p.m., vehicles driven by Shandi Christensen, of Atlantic, and Gretchen Beer, of Anita, were both eastbound on 7th Street and stopped at the red light at the intersection with Plum Street. Another eastbound vehicle, driven by Samantha Schroeder, of Atlantic, failed to stop in time.

Her vehicle hit the rear of Beer’s vehicle, which then struck the rear of the Christensen vehicle. Authorities say Beer was transported by private vehicle to the Cass County Memorial Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. A passenger in Christensen’s vehicle hit the window with his head, but was not transported.

Schroeder was cited for Failure to Stop in Assured Clear Distance. Damage from the collisions amounted to $6,800.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Pro Bowl running back Jamaal Charles was still held out of Chiefs practice Tuesday after hurting his foot in an accident while moving out of the dorms last week. Charles did not make the trip to Carolina for Sunday’s preseason game after getting hurt on the final day of practice at Missouri Western. The Chiefs resumed training camp at their own facility in Kansas City in anticipation of Saturday night’s game against Minnesota.

With Charles out, Knile Davis and Cyrus Gray have been getting the majority of snaps. Other players not participating Tuesday included safety Eric Berry (heel), wide receivers Dwayne Bowe (quad) and Junior Hemingway (hip), linebackers Joe Mays (wrist) and Josh Martin (quad), offensive tackle Ryan McKee (knee) and defensive tackle Jermelle Cudjo (hamstring).

Nation’s Prep Baseball Coach Win Leader Gene Schultz Retires

A 45-year baseball coaching career of high school kids officially came to an end last night when Gene Schultz tendered his resignation at Kee, Lansing.

Schultz is the national win leader with eye-popping numbers. His Iowa record of 1,754-398 dwarfs all other rivals. It includes a record of 176-57 from 11 spring or fall seasons. His National Federation record, which includes summer season games only, is 1,578-341.

He arrived at Kee High School in the fall of 1969 and almost immediately his teams stamped themselves as a perennial power.

Under Schultz’s guidance the Kee Hawks authored numerous entries into the Iowa all-time baseball list and the NFHS National Record Book. His teams have an Iowa best of 9 summer state championships which was equaled by Assumption, Davenport this past season. His 9 summer state titles are the best of any Iowa coach.

He took the Hawks to 19 summer state tournaments and 16 championship games, both Iowa bests for a coach or a school. Their 32 summer state tournament wins (32-10) is also an Iowa best, for a school or a coach. In addition, his teams won two Fall State Championships and finished runner-up twice.

His teams were noted for playing opponents in all four of Iowa’s class structure and would travel extensively to compete against the top teams. He had a hand in overseeing a revitalization of their home diamond, Shooky Fink Field, turning it into one of the marquee sites for high school baseball.

Schultz also coached boys’ basketball at Kee, registering 398 victories.
