SYLVAN JOHN KLEIN, 84, of Harlan, died Friday, July 14, 2023, at Myrtue Medical Center. A Mass of Christian Burial for SYLVAN JOHN KLEIN will be held 10:30-a.m. Tuesday, July 18, 2023, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan. Pauley-Jones Funeral Home in Harlan has the arrangements.

Visitation  at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan is on Monday, July 17th, from 5-until 8-p.m., with a Wake Service at 7-p.m.

Burial is in the Harlan Cemetery.

SYLVAN JOHN KLEIN is survived by:

His wife – Yvonne “Bonnie” Klein, of Harlan.

His daughter – Cheryl (Rick) Andersen, of Harlan.

His son – Bob (Julie) Klein, of Harlan.

His sisters – Alice (Leo “Spike”) Kloewer, of Harlan; Rita Hatcher, and Kathy Feldman, both of Omaha, NE

His brothers – Kenny (Mary) Klein of Omaha, NE., Gary (Mary) Klein of Memphis, TN.

5 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; and his sister-in-law Leona “Jonesy” Klein, of Westphalia, IA

Light west wind becoming west southwest 6 to 11 mph in the morning. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.
Tonight: Isolated showers and thunderstorms before 9pm. Areas of smoke. Partly cloudy, with a low around 58. West northwest wind 5 to 9 mph becoming light and variable. Chance of precipitation is 20%.
Monday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 79. North northeast wind 5 to 8 mph.

Saturday’s High in Atlantic was 84 and the low was 60. This day last year the high was 79 and the low was 69. The all-time record high on this date in Atlantic, was 109 set in 1936. The record low was 45 in 1906. Sunrise was at 5:59 a.m.; Sunset is at 8:51.

Air Quality Alert for Iowa through Noon on Monday (7/17/23)

The Iowa DNR has issued an Air Quality Alert for fine particulate pollution, which is in effect for all of Iowa Through
Noon Monday…

Smoke from wildfires in Alberta and British Columbia continues to sit across Iowa. Air quality is expected to improve statewide by Monday morning, with smoke clearing from north to south starting this (Sunday) evening through Monday morning.

The DNR recommends that people reduce long or intense activities, and take more breaks during outdoor activities until air quality conditions improve. The recommendation is especially pertinent to individuals with heart or lung disease, older adults, children and teenagers, and outdoor workers. People in these categories should consider rescheduling or moving outdoor activities indoors.

DONALD “LeRoy” HANSEN, 93, of Exira, died Saturday, July 15, 2023, at Salem Lutheran Homes in Elk Horn (IA). Graveside services for DONALD “LeRoy” HANSEN will be held 1-p.m. Friday, July 21, 2023, at the Oak Hill Cemetery, west of Brayton. Schmidt Family Funeral Home in Atlantic has the arrangements.

DONALD “LeRoy” HANSEN is survived by:

His sons – Robert (Lisa) Hansen, of Atlantic; Rick (Janet) Hansen, and Rodney (Nancy) Hansen, all of Audubon;and Roger (Brenda) Hansen, of Collins (IA).

His daughter-in-law: Kathy Hansen, of Anita.

9 grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren.

Two arrests reported in Montgomery County

The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office reports one arrest Friday night and another early Saturday morning. At approximately 8:35 p.m. on Friday Deputies arrested a 17-year-old juvenile for Simple Assault. He was cited into court and released to a parent.

On Saturday morning at 1:17 a.m. Montgomery County Sheriff’s Deputies investigated a traffic stop in the 2100 block of Highway 48 and arrested 57-year-old Kevin Michael Reavis of Red Oak for OWI 1st Offense. Reavis was taken to the Montgomery County Jail and held on $1,000 bond.

No injuries during truck rollover in rural Montgomery County

The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office reports no one was injured during a single vehicle rollover accident on Friday afternoon. Deputies were called to the crash at about 3:45 p.m. at the intersection of 2 Level B roads, 210th Street and R Avenue. Upon arrival both occupants of a 2020 Ford F150 were standing outside the truck which had rolled and landed on it’s top. The driver Bobby Harakat of Henderson, NV and occupant Anthony Henderson of Tempe, AZ refused medical treatment at the scene. No citations were issued. The vehicle was determined to be a total loss.

3 dead following a crash Friday in Cass County (IA)

(Atlantic, Iowa) – A collision early this (Friday) afternoon northeast of Atlantic claimed three lives and left two others injured. The crash on Highway 71 and Troublesome Creek Road happened at around 12:50-p.m.  According to the Iowa State Patrol, a 1999 Ford F-350 pickup driven by 43-year-old Micheal Adam Warnaca, of Exira, was traveling north on Highway 71 and a 2001 Toyota Camry driven by 46-year-old Erick William Kerkman, of North Liberty, was traveling southbound.

For reasons unknown, near the intersection of Troublesome Creek Road, the pickup crossed the center line of the Highway and struck the Camry head-on. The car came to rest in the west ditch, facing west. The pickup rolled onto its passenger side and came to rest on the west shoulder, facing west.

Michael Warnaca, Erick Kerkman and a 15-year-old female passenger in the Camry, from North Liberty, died at the scene. A 10-year-old male from Exira and a 12-year old male from North Liberty, were injured in the collision. The 10-year-old was transported by Cass EMS to Cass Health in Atlantic, while the 12-year old was transported by Cass EMS to the University of Nebraska Medical Center, in Omaha

Warnaca and his 10-year-old passenger were not wearing their seat belts. Kerkman, the 15-year-old female and the 12-year-old, were wearing their seat belts. Highway 71 was blocked in both directions for about 3 1/2 hours, while the crash remained under investigation, and the vehicles and debris were removed.

The accident remains under investigation.
