Schull and hot bats lead Clarinda past Atlantic baseball

Sports

June 18th, 2020 by admin

Michael Schull held Atlantic to 1 run in 4 1/3 innings of work and the Clarinda Cardinals racked up 12 hits on their way to a 12-3 win over Atlantic on Thursday night in Griswold.

The Cardinals jumped on top early with 2 runs in the first. Atlantic pushed one across in the bottom of the inning but the Cardinals followed with 4 in the second and 3 more in the third to lead 9-1 after 3. Clarinda cruised to the win from there with the Trojans only threatening a big inning in the 5th when they scored two and left 3 on base.

Schull got the win with 6 strikeouts and never faced more than four batters in an inning. Cooper Neal came on to get the save and finished with 4 strikeouts.

Dayton Templeton took the loss for Atlantic going just two frames before Brody O’Brien came on to finish the rest of the game. Ethan and Grant Sturm had two hits each on the night and Grant scored two runs.

The Trojans fall to 1-2 and will get ready to face a tough St. Albert team on Monday night. We’ll have that game on KJAN.

Clarinda improves to 2-1 on the season and will travel to face Denison-Schleswig Friday.

Iowa Speedway’s IndyCar races to allow fans

Sports

June 18th, 2020 by Ric Hanson

A limited number of spectators will be allowed at Iowa Speedway each night for IndyCar races July 17-18.

About 5,000-6,000 tickets will be available each night at the facility, which has more than 25,000 permanent seats. Groups of fans will be separated by at least 6 feet in order to align with state guidelines for COVID-19 at the oval track, which is just under a mile long.

All tickets previously purchased for the Iowa races will be honored, including season tickets. But seating will be reassigned for all existent ticketholders in order to follow safe social distancing guidelines. A limited number of tickets are still available for purchase.

IndyCar didn’t allow fans for its first race of this season June 6 at Texas, and no spectators will be at the next race July 4 on the road course at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Tickets are already on sale for the two races July 11-12 at Road America in Wisconsin, on the 4-mile, 14-turn road course.

Atlantic hosts Clarinda baseball tonight on KJAN and KJANTV

Sports

June 18th, 2020 by admin

The Atlantic Trojans baseball team is set to host the Clarinda Cardinals in high school baseball tonight and we’ll have coverage on KJAN and KJANTV. The game schedule was adjusted to have the Varsity game first at 5:30 p.m. due to the chance of rain moving in.

The Trojans come in to the contest at 1-1 on the young season after an opening loss to Lewis Central 2-12 and then a win over Denison-Schleswig 15-5. Grant Sturm had 4 hits and 4 RBIs in that win over the Monarchs Tuesday.

The Cardinals are also 1-1 on the season. They opened with a loss at Shenandoah 0-1 and then on Wednesday night defeated Southwest Valley 12-2.  Jarod McNeese had 2 hits and 3 RBIs in that win last night.

The game is being played at the Trojans home this year at the Griswold baseball field. Our coverage will start about 5:15 p.m. with first pitch set for 5:30 p.m. Chris Parks and Jarod McKee will have the call on AM 1220, FM 101.1, and online at kjan.com. Jim Field will also be along to help bring you a live video stream as well on KJANTV!
