Herky on Parade auction set for next week

Sports

September 6th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Those wanting their own Herky statue can head to Iowa City next week for the 2014 Herky on Parade live auction. Herky, the hawk, is the mascot of the Iowa Hawkeyes. The first parade was held in 2004, when about 30 variations of the 6-foot fiberglass statues were displayed as part of the Herky on Parade public art project, which helped celebrate Kinnick Stadium’s 75th anniversary.

The Iowa City Press-Citizen reports that this year’s auction will be held Friday at the Englert Theatre in Iowa City. Doors open and bidder registration begins at 5 p.m. Tickets to the event are $5. All proceeds benefit the United Way of Johnson and Washington counties.

Pesticide drift is persistent problem for farmers

Ag/Outdoor, News

September 6th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Organic and specialty crop growers are trying to make a living off the rising consumer interest in locally grown and organic foods. But the smaller farms are often islands surrounded by a sea of conventionally grown crops that get sprayed with herbicides, insecticides and fungicides. Pesticide drift is a serious concern for them, and they’ve come up with a variety of defenses.

Many plant buffer strips. Twelve states participate in a registry of organic and other farms to tip aerial and ground sprayers off to areas they need to avoid. And in Iowa, a group has produced a pamphlet that instructs farmers how to protect vulnerable crops.

The aerial spraying industry and pesticide manufacturers, meanwhile, say they’ve made big strides in controlling drift through education and new technologies.

Cards Fall to Brewers Friday

Sports

September 5th, 2014 by admin

MILWAUKEE (AP) – Scooter Gennett drove in three runs and Mike Fiers pitched into the seventh inning to lead Milwaukee past St. Louis 6-2 Friday night, snapping the Brewers’ nine-game losing streak and trimming the Cardinals’ lead in the NL Central to three games.

Fiers (5-2) gave up two runs and seven hits in 6 2-3 innings, improving to 5-1 in six starts since being called up from Triple-A Nashville on Aug. 9.

Cardinals starter John Lackey (2-2) gave up all six runs and nine hits in six innings as St. Louis snapped a six-game winning streak.

Gennett had a two-run single in the third and an RBI double in the fifth, and Lucroy added a run-scoring single to put the Brewers up 4-0.

Jhonny Peralta’s 19th homer got St. Louis on the board in the sixth, but Khris Davis’ two-run shot in the bottom of the inning made it 6-1.
