Lewis man injured in Adams County rollover accident, Saturday

One person was injured during a rollover accident Saturday afternoon, in Adams County. The Sheriff’s Office says Richard Mosier, of Lewis, was transported to the hospital in Corning, after the vehicle he was a passenger in rolled into a ditch at around 12:15-p.m., near 1064 State Highway 148.

The driven of the vehicle, 72-year old Claudia Conn, of Lewis, was not injured.

Bowling Green beats Drake 77-58

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Richaun Holmes scored 12 points, grabbed four rebounds and had five blocked shots as Bowling Green beat Drake 77-58 on Saturday in the season opener for both teams. Jehvon Clarke added 16 points from the bench for the Falcons. Spencer Parker and Jovan Austin chipped in 10 apiece. The team went 8 of 8 from the free throw line, hit 52 percent from the field and 41 percent from 3-point range.

The Falcons took a 17-8 lead early in the first period with the help of 3-pointers from Clarke, Chauncey Orr and Garrett Mayleben. They led 47-31 at halftime and never had to look back as they led Drake by double digits throughout the second half.

Reed Timmer led Drake with 16 points and six assists. Jacob Enevold Jensen added 10 points and five rebounds. The Bulldogs hit just 37 percent from the field overall.

Northern Iowa defeats North Dakota 64-52

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) — Seth Tuttle finished with 24 points and nine rebounds to lead Northern Iowa to a 64-52 victory over North Dakota to open the season on Saturday. Wes Washpun finished with 15 points, making 7 of 10 free throws and Nate Buss added 12 points and six rebounds including four 3-pointers, for Northern Iowa. Tuttle finished was 9 of 13, going 5 of 7 from the free throw line.

Jaron Nash, Terrel de Rouen and Quinton Hooker each finished with 11 points for North Dakota. Nash also grabbing five rebounds. Down 24-21 toward the end of the first half, Northern Iowa went on a 10-5 run to give them a 31-29 edge heading into the break. Tuttle scored 14 in the second half as the Panthers pulled away.

Northern Iowa rolls past Southern Illinois 40-21

CARBONDALE, Ill. (AP) — Brion Carnes threw for two touchdowns, David Johnson ran for two more and the Northern Iowa’s defense and special teams scored in a 40-21 victory over Southern Illinois on Saturday.

Turnovers loomed large in the win for the Panthers (7-4, 5-2 Missouri Valley). Max Busher returned an interception 24 yards to set up Johnson’s 1-yard touchdown. Tim Kilfoy’s second pick-six this season made it 21-0. In the third quarter, Tate Omli recovered a fumbled punt snap in the end zone for a 27-0 advantage. In the final quarter, Ryan West was intercepted a third time, this one by Ray Mitchell, setting up Carnes’ 32-yard scoring pass to Brett LeMaster on the next play.

UNI’s defense and special teams have scored 153 of the team’s 349 points this season. MyCole Pruitt became SIU’s career receptions leader with 211 after making nine catches Saturday.

1 killed, 1 injured during head-on collision in NW IA

A head-on collision late Saturday morning in northwest Iowa’s Clay County has claimed the life of one woman and resulted in another transported to a hospital. The Iowa State Patrol says a 2006 Ford Freestyle driven by 64-year old Dollene Kinnetz, of Hartley, and a 2009 Chevy Malibu driven by 49-year old Carolyn Alger, of Spencer, collided on Clay County road B-24, east of Country Club Lane. Both women were transported to the Spencer Hospital, where Kinnetz died from her injuries.

The accident, which occurred at around 10-a.m., remains under investigation.

6-year old hit by a pickup truck during sledding accident in Council Bluffs

A child suffered life-threatening injuries during a sledding accident Saturday afternoon, in Pottawattamie County. According to Council Bluffs Police, the unidentified  6-year old girl was sledding eastbound down a hill and entered the southbound lane of Bennett Avenue, where she was struck by the passenger side of a 2005 Chevrolet pickup.

The accident happened just before 1-p.m.The child was transported to the University of Nebraska Medical Center. Her name was being withheld pending notification of family. The accident remained under investigation.

Council Bluffs animal shelter to open next year

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) — A new western Iowa animal shelter to be used by the Midlands Humane Society and the Council Bluffs Animal Control Department is set to open early next year. Society spokeswoman Michelle Miller tells the Daily Nonpareil that it could open the first week of January.

Located near the Iowa Western Community College campus, the $3.2 million, 11,600-square-foot building will greatly expand the number of holding areas currently available at the city shelter. Dogs and cats kept in the shelter will be exposed to natural light in a climate-controlled environment.

Private donations paid for the shelter. Miller says fundraising efforts now will go toward covering the first 18 months of daily operating expenses.

Iowa batters Illinois with run game, 30-14

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) — Running back Mark Weisman ran for 134 yards and Iowa battered Illinois with 587 yards of offense Saturday in a 30-14 win. The Hawkeyes (7-3, 4-2 Big Ten) ran for a season-high 304 yards. Quarterback Jake Rudock was 14-21 for 210 yards and two touchdowns before leaving in the fourth quarter with the game in hand.

Early on, Iowa had to scrounge for points. The Hawkeyes took a 2-0 lead on a first-quarter safety and Illinois’ defense stopped them three times on fourth down to keep the game close. Iowa led 9-7 at the half. But Iowa’s run game wore Illinois (4-6, 1-5) down and set up 21 second-half points that sealed the game.

Illinois quarterback Wes Lunt played for the first time since breaking his left leg Oct. 4 against Purdue. But he finished a quiet 14-25 for 102 yards and one touchdown.
