Norvell leads Western Illinois past Drake 38-13

MAYCOMB, Ill. (AP) — Trenton Norvell accounted for two touchdowns to lead Western Illinois to a 38-13 victory over Drake Saturday. Norvell completed his first five pass attempts, then rushed for a 7-yard touchdown on Western Illinois’ opening drive. He threw a 71-yard touchdown pass to Quadarias Mireles in the fourth quarter to cap the scoring for the Leathernecks.

Norvell was 15 of 22 for 205 yards and J.C. Baker ran for 130 yards on 20 carries to lead Western Illinois (2-1). Cody Thibault came off the bench and threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Michael Hudson and Ben Tesson kicked a 43-yard field goal to pull Drake (1-2) within 14-10 at the half.

David McDaniel blocked a Cam Bohnert punt and Brad Blumenshine returned it 27 yards for a touchdown to give Western Illinois a 28-10 lead in the third quarter.

Cardinals hold off Rockies 5-4

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Matt Holliday homered in the first inning for the second straight night and Shelby Miller pitched six solid innings and had an RBI double, leading the St. Louis Cardinals to a 5-4 victory over the Colorado Rockies on Saturday night.

Matt Carpenter added a two-run homer in the second for the NL Central leaders, who have won 12 in a row at home in the final month of the season dating to last Sept. 14. Of their 10 runs in the first two games of this series, seven have come in the first two innings. The Cardinals are 9-4 this month and took a 3 1-2 game lead over Pittsburgh.

Wilin Rosario, Josh Rutledge and pinch-hitter Michael McHenry had an RBI apiece in the ninth and the Rockies put the tying run on second before Pat Neshek got pinch-hitter Rafael Ynoa to fly out for his sixth save in nine chances.

Iowa State rallies past Iowa 20-17

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) – Cole Netten hit a 42-yard field goal with two seconds left and Iowa State rallied to beat Iowa 20-17 on Saturday, picking up its first win of the season. Sam Richardson had 255 yards passing and 2 TDs for the Cyclones (1-2), who beat the rival Hawkeyes (2-1) for the third time in four tries.

Iowa State took a 17-14 lead with 7:33 left on Richardson’s 27-yard TD pass to DeVondrick Nealy. Iowa answered with Marshall Koehn’s 44-yard field goal with 4:08 to go. Netten appeared to miss his first try at the game-winner, but Iowa had already called a timeout. Netten’s second attempt went straight through the uprights.

Jake Rudock threw for 146 yards and an interception for Iowa, which was held to just three points after halftime.

Pilot in western Iowa helicopter crash dies in Omaha

MACEDONIA, Iowa (AP) – The pilot of a helicopter that crashed last week in Pottawattamie County has died at the Omaha hospital where he was being treated. An official with Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha told the Omaha World-Herald that 26-year old Christopher Moore, of Creston, died Thursday.

Moore was operating the crop-dusting helicopter over a bean field near Macedonia when it hit a power line on Sept. 6th and crashed. Treynor Fire Chief Russ Maguire had said Moore was out of the wreckage and conscious when paramedics arrived following the crash. Authorities had said at the time that his injuries weren’t believed to have been life-threatening.

Funeral services for Chris Moore will be held Tuesday.

Trailer fishtails, causes accident near Red Oak Saturday

No injuries were reported after a trailer being pulled by a pickup began to sway, causing the vehicle to go out of control Saturday morning, about a mile west of Red Oak. According to the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, 37-year old Joshua Morrison, of Red Oak, was driving a 2000 Ford F-150 eastbound on Highway 34 from Evergreen Avenue, at around 10:50-a.m., when the 2011 Sandpiper dump trailer the pickup was pulling began to “fish tail”.

When Morrison was unable to control the action, the truck entered the south ditch about one-half mile south of G Avenue. The trailer, owned by Corning Rental, jackknifed and hit the passenger side of the pickup, causing $2,500 damage.

No citations were issued.

No injuries following straight truck accident near Atlantic

Authorities say no injuries were reported following a rollover accident involving a straight truck this (Saturday) morning, southwest of Atlantic. The accident happened between 9 and 10-a.m. on Highway 6 near the intersection with Lansing Road. Atlantic Fire and Rescue responded to the scene to clean-up a fuel spill that occurred when the truck tipped over.

The Cass County Sheriff’s Office and Atlantic Police also responded to the scene. No other details are currently available.

Microwave Apple Crispphoto 2

  • 6 medium apples, peeled and sliced
  • ¾ cup brown sugar, divided
  • ½ cup flour, divided
  • ¾ cup quick oatmeal
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • ½ cup cold butter

Toss apples with ¼ cup brown sugar and 2 Tablespoons flour.  Place in glass pie baking dish.  Combine oats, cinnamon, remaining brown sugar and flour.  Cut in butter until crumbly; sprinkle over apples. Microwave 10 to 20 minutes or until tender.  Time varies with thickness of slices and microwave power.

  • One medium apple
  • ¼ teaspoon cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon corn starch
  • 1 teaspoon brown sugar
  • 1 Tablespoon water.

Use a freezer quality pint or quart zipper bag.  Mix all ingredients except apple in bag.  Slice apple, peeled or not; place bag.  Close bag; tip bag to mix ingredients together.  Make a small opening in seal to vent.  Microwave 2 minutes or until tender. Will be steamy.  Eat as is or pour over ice cream, oatmeal or cinnamon-sugar pita chips.
