Newell-Fonda captured the school’s first-ever state football title with a come-from-behind 39-35 win over Fremont-Mills in the 8-Man final at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls today. The Mustangs ran off 11 straight wins after an 0-3 start to the season.
Newell-Fonda outgained the Knights 387-255 total yards. After quarterback Brady Dicks was injured in the first half, running back Cole Wise picked up the offensive slack carrying 29 times for 127 yards and a touchdown. Wise also caught three passes for 58 yards and a touchdown. Dicks and his replacement Jason Hess combined to complete 10 of 17 passes for 172 yards and three TD’s. Hess scored the winning touchdown on an eight yard run with just :17 left.
Fremont-Mills got the ball back at midfield after kick-off and after completing a couple of hook-and-lateral passes along the sideline to get inside the ten yard line with :04 left, a fumble recovered by Newell-Fonda ended the game.
Fremont-Mills ends the season with a mark of 13-1.
