Council Bluffs Man Arrested on Warrant in Red Oak

Officers with the Red Oak Police Department arrested a Council Bluffs man on an active warrant on Friday (11/28) night at 11:38pm.  Officers spoke with 44-year-old John Bowen in front of the Montgomery County Law Enforcement Center about an issue and discovered he had an active warrant through Douglas County, Nebraska.  He was then taken into custody and held on $5,000 bond and set for trial.

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Russell Westbrook scored 32 points in his first game back from a broken right hand, and the Thunder steamrolled the Knicks 105-78. Westbrook was injured in the second game of the season and hadn’t played since. He returned in grand fashion, making 12 of 17 shots, including 3 of 4 3-pointers, and adding eight assists and seven rebounds in just 23 minutes.

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP)— The Arizona Wildcats will play No. 3 Oregon in the Pac-12 Championship game on Dec. 5 at Levi’s Stadium in the Bay Area. Nick Wilson ran for 178 yards and three touchdowns and No. 12 Arizona claimed the Pac-12 South title by holding off 13th-ranked Arizona State 42-35.

COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) — Missouri is going to the SEC championship for the second straight year. Marcus Murphy scored the go-ahead touchdown on a 12-yard run with 4:38 left and Markus Golden recovered a fumble to seal No. 17 Missouri’s 21-14 victory over Arkansas.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — UNLV football coach Bobby Hauck will step down after coaching today’s season finale against Nevada. The Rebels are 2-10 this year and 15-48 in five seasons under Hauck, including 11-27 in the Mountain West Conference.

NEW YORK (AP) — The Ray Rice countdown is on. After an arbitrator vacated his indefinite suspension for punching his fiancee, now his wife and the NFL ruled the free agent running back could play upon signing with any team, jockeying between Rice’s agent and NFL teams got under way.

Clarinda Academy Escapee quickly apprehended Fri. night

An escapee from the Clarinda Academy was quickly apprehended Friday night. Clarinda Police Chief Keith Brothers said in a Press Release that a white male who was originally from the Elk Horn, Iowa, area, escaped sometime between 7:30-and 8-p.m., Friday. Just before 9-p.m., Brothers announced the escapee had been apprehended and brought back to the facility.

Other than the suspect’s physical description, no other details about the incident were released. There have been numerous, previous escapes from the Clarinda Academy this year. The Clarinda Academy, is a privately run school that offers educational and residential treatment programs for boys and girls.

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) — Authorities say icy roads have led to multiple car crashes on Interstate 29 in Sioux City. Sergeant Mike Manthorne with the Sioux City Police Department says the Friday morning crashes involved six vehicles traveling southbound and taking an exit ramp.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — An Iowa City man has been accused of stabbing his wife repeatedly with a piece of broken glass. Forty-eight-year-old Scott Bender faces an attempted murder charge in connection to the Wednesday morning altercation. A family member allegedly stopped the attack. The woman survived, but authorities haven’t released additional information about her condition.

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — New Jersey Republican Governor Chris Christie has vetoed a politically charged bill that would have banned the use of certain pig cages in the state. On Friday, the potential 2016 presidential contender called the bill a “solution in search of a problem.” The contraptions are rarely used on New Jersey’s 300 pig farms. But they’re widespread in Iowa, a state that’s home to the nation’s first presidential nominating caucuses.

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) — Council Bluffs is considering whether to begin regular city inspections of rental housing, but the idea has drawn fire from some landlords. The Daily Nonpareil says the current policy requires self-inspections by the property owners. Mayor Matt Walsh says Council Bluffs is the only city in Iowa with a population of 15,000 or more that doesn’t have professional inspectors.

Valparaiso cruises past Drake 66-46

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) – Darien Walker scored 19 points and Keith Carter added 15 to lead Valparaiso to its fourth-straight victory with a 66-46 win over Drake on Friday night. Walker shot 7 of 14 from the field and Carter was 5 of 8, and the two combined for 23 second-half points. Alec Peters added 10 points and six rebounds for Valparaiso (5-1).

The Crusaders led by eight points at the half and went on a 12-2 run after the break to go up 41-23 with 15:54 left to play. Valparaiso shot 24 of 55 from the floor and finished at 33.3 percent (7 of 21) from behind the arc after a slow 1-of-11 start on 3-pointers.

Jordan Daniels scored 18 points – including three 3-pointers – for the Bulldogs (1-4), who combined for 15 turnovers.

JANET FLORINE FESER (SIEPKER), 67, of Defiance, died Thu., Nov. 27th, at the Manning Regional Healthcare Center. A Mass of Christian Burial service for JANET FESER (SIEPKER) will be held 10:30-a.m. Mon., Dec. 1st, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Defiance. Pauley-Jones Funeral Home in Harlan has the arrangements.

Visitation at the funeral home is from Noon until 8-pm on Sun., Nov. 30th, with a Rosary at 7-pm, and the family greeting friends from 4-to 8-pm.

Burial will be in the Sts. Peter and Paul Cemetery.

Arkansas upends No. 17 Iowa 77-67

LAS VEGAS (AP) – Kelsey Brooks scored 24 points, Jessica Jackson added 22 and Arkansas pulled away from No. 17 Iowa 77-67 on Friday at the South Pointe Thanksgiving Shootout. The Razorbacks (5-0) took control by pounding the boards and getting to the free throw line. Arkansas had a 51-24 rebounding advantage and hit 20 of 33 free throws. Iowa (5-1), which got 23 points from Ally Disterhoft, was just 2 of 6 from the foul line.  The Hawkeyes averaged more than 90 points in winning their first five games but Arkansas allowed just 44.8.

Jhasmin Bowen added 14 points for Arkansas and had nine rebounds. Melissa Wolff had 9 points and 10 rebounds and Calli Berna had nine assists. Iowa was up 27-25 at the half but the Razorbacks, who shot 36 percent in the first half, warmed up to 53 percent and also made 10 free throws in the final 66 seconds.

MARJORIE E. SCHULTZ, 91, of Atlantic, died Fri., Nov. 28th. No services are planned, but a visitation for MARJORIE SCHULTZ will be held from 3-until 4-pm on Mon., Dec. 1st, at the Hockenberry Family Care Funeral Home in Atlantic.

A private family burial for Marjorie Schultz will be held in the St. Mark’s Lutheran Cemetery at Verdon, NE.

Memorials may be directed to St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Verdon, NE.
