Cass County Engineer’s report to the Board of Supervisors

(Atlantic, Iowa) – Cass County Engineer Trent Wolken, Tuesday, updated the Board of Supervisors on Secondary Roads Department Maintenance and Activities. With the recent rain and muddy spots being formed by traffic, they’re working on filling those-in with road rock. They”re also doing some ditch work and driveways. Construction-wise, Wolken said work is being done on three bridges in the County.

Wolken said their goal is to have work on the G-30 bridge and the bridge near Anita, finished before Winter.

And, Supervisor Mark O’Brien thanked Wolken’s Secondary Roads Dept. crews, for removing a large tree on the courthouse property that fell during high winds and storms that occurred last we

Sac County man arrested on sex abuse & lascivious acts charges

(Sac City, Iowa) – A man from northwest Iowa’s Sac County was arrested Monday on sex abuse and other charges. The Sac County Sheriff’s Office reports 38-year-old Antonio Deon Pharms from Lytton, Iowa, is charged with three counts of sex abuse 2nd degree and three counts of lascivious acts with a child.

An investigation in his alleged activities began June 30, 2023, when the father of a juvenile female was notified of messages between Pharms and his thirteen-year-old daughter. Pharms was arrested later that evening on a charge of violating a no-contact order on an unrelated case. The thirteen-year -old female was interviewed by the Child Advocacy Center in Waterloo. During the interview it was learned that sexual contact had occurred at least three times in the past two months between Pharms and the juvenile female.
Antonio Pharms was officially charged on July 15, 2023. He has been in the Sac County Jail since his arrest on June 30th. Pharms was being held on a $105,000 bond. The Iowa Department of Human Services has also been working on this case.
*All persons are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

No. 7 Clarksville advances at 1A state softball

Seventh ranked Clarksville used a five-run fifth inning en route to a 7-1 win over #3 Southeast Warren in a 1A quarterfinal Tuesday night at state softball . Clarksville coach Katie Burman says her team found their rhythm at the plate and overcame an elite defense.

Pitcher Cailyn Hardy recorded three strikeouts while giving up four hits and batting in three runs. Emmalee Manwarren had three hits to lead the Indians offensively.

Clarksville will face second ranked North Linn in tonight’’s semifinal. Burman expects her team to play loose against an unfamiliar opponent.

No. 7 Cascade edges Woodward-Granger at 2A state baseball

Seventh ranked Cascade erased an early 4-0 deficit to edge Woodward-Granger 7-6, Tuesday, at the 2A state baseball tournament in Carroll. Cade Rausch went the distance on the mound for Cascade after yielding four early runs.

Cascade coach Roman Hummel. It was one of several close games in the 2A quarterfinals.
