Pat Lugo Named USA Wrestling Athlete of the Week

Sports

July 1st, 2020 by admin

IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa All-American and Hawkeye Wrestling Club member Pat Lugo has been named USA Wrestling Athlete of the Week.

At the co-main event of last weekend’s Rumble on the Rooftop in Chicago, one of the first wrestling events since March, Lugo tallied three step-outs and a second-period takedown to defeat former Ohio State All-American Luke Pletcher, 5-0.

The event marked both wrestlers’ first competition since their senior NCAA seasons were cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Each week USA Wrestling will select an Athlete of the Week based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling from youth programs through the senior level. Twitter fan votes also play a part in decision.

DENVER (AP) — The Denver Nuggets have closed their practice facilities amid a round of positive coronavirus results and three New Orleans Pelicans players have tested positive for the virus. The Nuggets say three members of their 35-person traveling party have tested positive for COVID-19. The traveling party includes players, coaches and staff. Earlier this summer, a person with knowledge of the situation told The Associated Press that Nuggets superstar center Nikola Jokic (NEE’-koh-lah YOH’-kich) tested positive for COVID-19 in Serbia and Denver coach Michael Malone revealed he had tested positive for coronavirus antibodies and believes he had the virus in March.

NEW YORK (AP) — Baseball’s minor leagues canceled their seasons because of the coronavirus pandemic, and the head of their governing body said more than half the 160 teams were in danger of failing without government assistance or private equity injections. The National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues made the long-expected announcement. Pat O’Conner, the president of the governing body, estimated that 85-90% of revenue was related to ticket money, concessions, parking and ballpark advertising. The minors drew 41.5 million fans last year for 176 teams in 15 leagues.

SAN DIEGO (AP) — The San Diego Padres have acquired infielder Jorge Mateo from the Oakland Athletics in the first trade since baseball resumed after a shutdown of more than three months due to the coronavirus pandemic. The Padres will send either a player or cash to the A’s for the 25-year-old Mateo, who will be added to the player pool for the resumption of spring training. The Padres are scheduled to have their first workout Friday at Petco Park. Mateo is a former top prospect with the New York Yankees, who signed him as a non-drafted free agent at 17 out of the Dominican Republic.

NEW YORK (AP) — Yankees general manager Brian Cashman is optimistic that right fielder Aaron Judge, left-hander James Paxton, center fielder Aaron Hicks and designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton will be ready to play in the time for New York’s rescheduled opener at World Series champion Washington on July 23. Judge did not play in any exhibition games due to discomfort in his right pectoral muscle and shoulder that he felt when swinging. Paxton had surgery Feb. 5 to repair a herniated disk in his back.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — The Oakland Athletics are selling cardboard cutouts with fans’ photos that they will put in the seats at the Coliseum this season. The team also plans to mix in images of former players and celebrities alongside the fan cutouts. Major League Baseball is looking to play a 60-game regular season this summer because of the coronavirus. There will be no fans at ballparks on opening day, but some markets are hoping to play in front of smaller crowds by the end of the season. The cardboard cutouts for A’s games range in price from $49 to $129. Proceeds from the sales go to charity.

Baseball’s minor leagues (Including I-Cubs) cancel 2020 seasons

NEW YORK (AP) — Baseball’s minor leagues (Including the Iowa Cubs) canceled their seasons, Tuesday, because of the coronavirus pandemic, and the head of their governing body said more than half the 160 teams were in danger of failing without government assistance or private equity injections. The National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues made the long-expected announcement.

Pat O’Conner, the president of the governing body, O’Conner estimated 85-90% of revenue was related to ticket money, concessions, parking and ballpark advertising. The minors drew 41.5 million fans last year for 176 teams in 15 leagues.

In a statement, Iowa Cubs President and General Manager Sam Bernabe said “We were aware that our 2020 season had a chance to end this way, however, today’s news is still disappointing both for our fans who enjoy games at Principal Park each season, and for our staff that had already put a lot of hard work into this year. We are setting our sights on April 2021 and look forward to another great year of Minor League Baseball in Des Moines.”

The Iowa Cubs said season ticket holders will be contacted in coming days and that single-game ticket holders can receive a full credit for 2021 tickets by emailing tickets@iowacubs.com.

Iowa Athletics Department Announces FY21 Budget Reductions

Sports

June 30th, 2020 by Ric Hanson

(Hawkeye Sports.com) IOWA CITY, Iowa –– As part of the University of Iowa Athletics Department plan to mitigate the financial effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, Henry B. and Patricia B. Tippie Director of Athletics Chair Gary Barta announced department budget reductions of approximately $15 million for FY21.

The athletics department budget for FY20 was $124.8 million. The 2020-21 budget was anticipated to be $127.5 million prior to the reductions. With the reductions in compensation and operations, the department’s FY21 budget proposal will be $112.5 million. The $15 million reduction includes nearly $13 million in reduced operating expenses, with the remaining in compensation adjustments.

“None of this is easy for our coaches and staff. I appreciate their continued understanding in these uncertain times,” Barta said. “The pandemic has dealt us a financial situation that requires difficult decisions. It is our responsibility to maintain a fiscally responsible operation while providing the highest level of service to our student-athletes.”

Reductions in salary and compensation are being spread across the department. Professional and Scientific, non-contracted, staff will see one-year salary reductions based on a graduated salary reduction scale. In general, staff earning above $200,000 will see a 10 percent base salary reduction, staff making $150,000-$199,999 a 7.5 percent reduction, salaries of $100,000-$149,999 a five percent reduction, $50,143-$99,999 a three percent reduction, and staff making below $50,143 a two percent salary reduction. Merit employees will participate in the budget reduction process through utilization of unpaid leave days in either six – or eight-day increments. Contracted employees were asked to participate in a voluntary salary reduction or contribution back to the department.

Specifically, head coaches Lisa Bluder, Tom Brands, Kirk Ferentz and Fran McCaffery, have voluntarily agreed to a one-year, 15 percent base salary reduction or contribution back to the athletics department. Deputy Athletics Director Barbara Burke has agreed to a 25 percent salary reduction, while Barta has reduced his total compensation package by more than 30 percent.

“I care deeply about our staff and recognize a reduction in salary will have a significant impact on many families throughout the department. I want to thank our entire staff for their support and understanding as we have worked through this process,” Barta said. “We are trying to balance making necessary financial cuts with spreading the sacrifice thoughtfully.”

The current reductions assume complete football and basketball seasons with fans in attendance. Any interruptions or reduction in these seasons would lead to more significant cuts.

“These are challenging times with significant uncertainty,” Barta said. “We are grateful for the loyal and generous support of our fans and appreciate knowing they are with us as we face this adversity.”

Grinnell cancels fall sports due to virus concerns

Sports

June 30th, 2020 by Ric Hanson

GRINNELL, Iowa (AP) — Grinnell College says it will cancel football and other fall sports because of concerns about the coronavirus. The Division III school announced Monday it would cancel sports including football, soccer, golf, cross country and volleyball. The college, located in the small city of Grinnell about 45 miles east of Des Moines, competes in the Midwest Conference.

Grinnell officials say they would wait to decide whether to allow other sports later in the school year. The decision comes less than a year after the college canceled much of its football season because its roster had dwindled to 28 players due to injuries. Grinnell had planned to resume football this year.

Candelaria Herrera

Eleanor Holthaus

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State senior middle blocker Candelaria Herrera and junior right side Eleanor Holthaus have been named to the 2020 All-Big 12 Volleyball Preseason Team, the conference announced Monday afternoon.

Both Herrera and Holthaus are first-time Preseason honorees. Despite not being on the Preseason Team in 2019, the duo were both able to elevate themselves onto the All-Big 12 First Team at the end of the season. Holthaus was a unanimous selection for the 2020 Preseason Team, one of eight in the league.

Herrera, from San Juan, Argentina and a 2019 AVCA All-Midwest Region and All-Big 12 First Team honoree, had a terrific two-way season for the Cyclones in 2019. In attack, she averaged 2.22 kills per set at a team-high .314 hitting percentage, an efficiency that ranks fourth in the Big 12. On defense, Herrera is second on ISU with 0.94 blocks per set, a number which rose to 1.18 per set against league opponents. She had 101 total blocks on the year, her second-straight season over 100 blocks. Following the season, Herrera returned to South America and helped her native Argentina qualify for the now-delayed 2020 Olympic Games.

Holthaus, from Richmond, Minnesota and also an AVCA All-Midwest Region and All-Big 12 First Team honoree, was the Cyclones’ leading attacker throughout the 2019 season. The right-side led ISU with 3.18 kills per set, sixth in the Big 12, which she got at .254 hitting. Her 16 matches with at least 10 kills led ISU, while she also had four double-doubles on the year, posting 2.34 digs per frame. Holthaus earned Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week after recording 19 kills against Oklahoma on Nov. 15.

The 2020 Big 12 Volleyball Preseason Poll will be announced tomorrow.

Mississippi transfer Blake Hinson signs with Iowa State

Sports

June 30th, 2020 by admin

AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State men’s basketball program and head coach Steve Prohm announced Monday the signing of Mississippi transfer Blake Hinson. Hinson, a 6-7 guard/forward, has two seasons of eligibility remaining.

In two seasons at Mississippi, Hinson averaged 9.1 points and 3.7 rebounds. He connected on 91 3-pointers at a 33.3 percent clip. He started 58 of the 60 games he played for Mississippi, reaching double figures 23 times.

“We are really excited to add to our program an experienced perimeter player that started for two years in the SEC,” Prohm said. “Blake brings great energy, a great personality and adds really good skill level to our program. He’s a great addition to our team and to the Iowa State community.”

In 2019-20, Hinson appeared in 28 games while making 27 starts for the Rebels. The Deltona, Florida native averaged 10.1 points, 4.6 rebounds and 1.4 assists, ranking third on the team in scoring and fourth in rebounding.

Hinson reached double figures in 14 games as a sophomore, including a season-high 23 points against CSU Bakersfield. He recorded a double-double of 16 points and 11 rebounds at Florida.

Hinson’s career high of 26 points came in a road win against No. 14 Mississippi State during his freshman season. He scored 13 points and pulled down five rebounds in 30 minutes in a loss to Iowa State in the Big 12/SEC Challenge.

Hinson was a four-star prospect out of high school after spending his senior season at basketball powerhouse Sunrise Christian Academy. He was the top-ranked player in Kansas according to 247Sports.

Hinson is the third transfer to sign with the Cyclones this summer, joining graduate transfer Jalen Coleman-Lands and junior Tyler Harris.
