Big fifth inning lifts St. Albert past CAM

The CAM Cougars jumped on top early but a 6-run 5th inning swung the game in favor of St. Albert in the Class 1A Substate 7 Final on Tuesday in Clarinda. The Falcons went on to win 9-5 and will head back to the State Tournament after a 1-year hiatus.

The Falcons scored a run in the top of the 1st on an RBI ground-out by Cy Patterson. The Cougars answered right back with 2 runs in the bottom of the frame. Colby Rich had an RBI sac-fly to center and Lane Spieker scored on a wild pitch. The Cougars added another run in the 3rd on another sac-fly from Rich to lead 3-1 until the 5th.

The Falcons then found some offense in the 5th. St. Albert sent the entire order to the plate and brought home 6 runs on 5 hits. The bases loaded up with no out and Jeff Miller drove in a run with a single. Ryan Generaux scored 2 on a double, Jeff Miller got home on a wild pitch, and Isaac Sherrill brought home 2 more with a single. The Falcons built on that momentum and loaded the bases again in the 6th with no out and eventually plated 2 runs on 2 hits.

CAM tried to inch back with a run in the 6th on an RBI double by Ben Tibken. Joe Kauffmann came in and struck out the side for the Falcons in the top of the 7th and the Cougars headed to the final half inning trailing 9-4. A couple of walks got Connor McKee and Jacob Holste on board. Kolby Nelson then grounded one towards second that turned into a double play. Lane Spieker dribbled an infield single that brought home McKee to make it 9-5. Cy Patterson was then able to strikeout Colby Rich to end the game.

CAM ends another phenomenal season with a record of 15-3. Cougars Head Coach Dan Daugherty said they were right there in the game and one bad inning cost them.

Coach Daugherty said the future is still bright with a lot of talent back for the Cougars, but he will also miss a Senior class that has meant a lot to CAM baseball.

St. Albert improved to 21-1 on the season and they will now wait to see who and when they will play in the State Tournament. One of the 1A Substate Final games was pushed to Wednesday night due to rain so they’ll have to wait for pairings until that game is played.

CAM meets St. Albert with State trip on the line

The CAM Cougars will try to earn a trip to the State Tournament tonight with a Substate Final meeting with the St. Albert Falcons. CAM (15-2) will be aiming for their second trip to the State Tourney in the past four seasons. St. Albert (20-1) will be trying to reach State for the second time in the past three seasons. The Falcons came up a run shy in of State trips in 2019 and 2017. That 2017 Substate Final was a 4-3 loss to CAM.

The Cougars and Falcons haven’t met again since that game in 2017 so it will surely stick in the mind of at least a few players that were part of that meeting. After the District win over Bedford, CAM Head Coach Dan Daugherty shared his thoughts on what it will take against a tough Falcons squad.

CAM Sophomore Cade Ticknor said the team is really excited for the opportunity to play in the Substate Final.

We’ll have coverage of the game on KJAN with pregame at 6:45 p.m. and first pitch at 7:00 p.m. Chris Parks will have the call from Clarinda on AM 1220, FM 101.1, and online at KJAN.com

Bernabe says there could be some games where the demand exceeds the number of available tickets.

Bernabe says each game will be treated like a separate session.

Bernabe says masks are not mandatory but are strongly recommended.

Principal Park has hosted the state tournament since 2005.

Here is the latest sports news from The Associated Press

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs began the intake process for first-year players Monday after the NFL gave them the go-ahead along with the Houston Texans, their opponent in the season opener Sept. 10. But it could be quite a while before they get on the field for training camp. All players must test negative twice before they are admitted to the facility, then they will spend a couple of days doing the more routine physicals and getting their equipment sorted out. Veterans are due July 28, and coach Andy Reid said it could be 10 days after that before full practices begin.

UNDATED (AP) — NFL players will be tested daily for the coronavirus for at least the first two weeks of training camp per the league’s new testing protocols. The new policy was approved by the NFL and the players’ union. Dr. Allen Sills, the NFL chief medical officer, said more than one negative test is required before players initially enter the building to begin physical exams or any form of team activity. After two weeks of daily testing, if the rate of those positive tests falls below 5%, testing would go to every other day.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Royals have placed right-hander Jakob Junis on the injured list to allow him to continue preparing for the season. He missed the first part of summer camp following a positive test for the coronavirus. The 27-year-old Junis test positive for COVID-19 during initial testing several weeks ago. The Royals said he was cleared about a week ago to return to baseball activities. Junis went 9-14 with a 5.24 ERA in 31 starts last season.

ATLANTA (AP) — The Atlanta Braves have removed a “Chop On” sign that sat near an entrance to Truist Park as the team considers its stance on fans’ tomahawk chop chant. The removal of the wooden sign came as the team changed its slogan from “Chop On” to “For The A” for the 2020 season. The team’s stance on the chant has been watched closely since last year’s NL Division Series. St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Ryan Helsley, a member of the Cherokee Nation, said he found the chant insulting. The Braves said they would continue to examine the chant after the season, and that process continues.

UNDATED (AP) — Major League Baseball is adding on-field advertising this season, both real and virtual. Allowed locations include the back of the pitcher’s mound, behind home plate, on tarps in the stands and in the grass in foul territory down the first-base lines. Teams have the choice whether to make the ads real or project them virtually during telecasts. In addition, physical ads can be put on the on-deck circle.
