3 arrests in Atlantic

The Atlantic Police Department reports three residents were arrested recently. Last Saturday (Dec. 13th), 22-year old Michael McConnell, of Atlantic, was arrested for Assault Causing Bodily Injury; Disorderly Conduct; and Public Intoxication. McConnell was booked into the Cass County Jail. That same day, 64-year old Dean Adams, of Atlantic, was arrested for Public Intoxication. Adams was booked into the Cass County Jail.

And, on Friday (Dec. 12th), 37-year old Richard D. Smith, of Atlantic, was arrested on a Cass County Warrant for Domestic Abuse Assault. Smith was also booked into the Cass County Jail.

RITA V. LEINEN, 92, of Woodbine, died Sunday, December 14th, at the Rosa Vista Home. A Mass of Christian Burial service for RITA LEINEN will be held 10-am Saturday, December 20th, at St. Mary Our Lady of Fatima Church in Portsmouth.  Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan has the arrangements.

Visitation at St. Mary’s Catholic Church is on Friday, December 19th, from 4 until 8-pm, with a Rosary at 7-pm.

Burial will be at the St Mary’s Cemetery in Portsmouth.

Her sons: Kenneth (Deb) Leinen, and Marvin (Pam) Leinen, of Portsmouth

Her daughters: Marilyn Leinen, of Adel; Joyce (Terry) Book, of Plattsmouth NE; Mary Lu Flaharty (Fiance Mike Ziemba), & Cathy (Doug) Hansen, all of Woodbine.

Her sisters: Stella Bexten, of Manilla; Margaret (Raphael) Grote, and Marie Smith, both of Dunlap, and Sister Frances Kloewer, of Omaha, NE

Her brothers: Charles (Rosemary) Kloewer, of Charter Oak; Michael (Marlys) Kloewer, of Manilla; and Gerald (Pauline) Kloewer of Harlan.

16 Grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren, 4 step-grandchildren, 12 step-great grandchildren, her daughter- and sister-in law’s.

KENNETH T. KREMER, 97, of Atlantic, (and formerly of rural Lewis) died Monday, Dec 15th, at the Cass County Memorial Hospital, in Atlantic. Cremation has taken place and memorial Services for KENNETH KREMER will be held at a later date at the First United Methodist Church in Atlantic.

VERA ELLEN CHALFANT, 91, of Guthrie Center, died Sunday, Dec. 14th, in Des Moines. Funeral Services for VERA CHALFANT will be held 10-am Thursday, Dec. 18th, at the First United Methodist Church in Guthrie Center. Twigg Funeral Home of Guthrie Center has the arrangements.

Missing boater’s body found in Lake Manawa

The body of a man who went missing in Lake Manawa after the canoe he was in capsized Sunday afternoon, has been found. KETV in Omaha reports the victim was an active duty airman stationed at Offut Air Force Base. His name has not yet been released. The body was discovered at around 11-a.m. today (Monday).

The victim, and another man, 36-year old Benjamin Ferguson, where in a canoe that overturned when it came into contact with ice on the lake on the south side of Council Bluffs. Ferguson managed to swim to shore after about 30-minutes, but the other man slipped below the surface of the lake after trying to cling to the canoe.

Ferguson, who is a Master Sergeant at Offut AFB and assigned to the Air Force Weather Agency, walked to the park ranger’s house to report the incident. He was suffering from extreme hypothermia when he was found, and was transported to an Omaha hospital, where he was expected to fully recover.
Rescuers had called-off a search for the other man Sunday evening, due to darkness.

The Mills County Sheriff’s Office reports a Nebraska woman was arrested Friday, for being a Fugitive from Justice. 18-year old Emilly Nichole Gelvin, of Omaha, was taken into custody at around 5:20-p.m. at 18818 Highway 370. Her bond was set at $1,000.  Also arrested on Friday, was 20-year old Mitchell Stephen Waller, of  Glenwood. Waller was arrested on a Warrant for Probation Violation. His bond was set at $5,000.

And, early Sunday morning, 21-year old Jeremy Lee Booher, of Hamburg, was arrested on a charge of OWI/1st Offense. He was being held in the Mills County Jail on $1,000 bond.

Man arrested in Stuart for stealing pop cans also charged with vehicle theft in Ankeny

A man arrested last week in Stuart for allegedly stealing pop cans from a local collection box, was also arrested a felony charge of Theft associated with an incident in Central Iowa. The Guthrie County Sheriff’s Office reports on December 10th, Stuart Police responded to a report about a man seen stealing pop cans from a local collection drive. The subject fled the scene and was located hiding in an apartment in Stuart. The suspect was identified as Christopher Grunder.

An eye-witnesses confirmed Grunder was responsible for the theft. During Grunder’s arrest, officers became aware he was in possession of a set of keys to a vehicle. They were able to determine the keys belonged to a stolen vehicle from Ankeny. The stolen vehicle was recovered a few blocks away, in Stuart. Grunder was arrested and transported to the Guthrie County Jail. He plead guilty to the theft of the pop cans, and was subsequently turned over to Polk County authorities.

In Polk County, Grunder faces a felony charge of Theft in the 2nd Degree, for the alleged theft of a motor vehicle in Ankeny. Grunder is also suspected in several other incidents of motor vehicle thefts and burglaries in the city of Ankeny.

The Stuart Police Department was assisted in its investigation by the Adair County Sheriff’s Office, The Guthrie County Sheriff’s Office, and the Ankeny Police Department.

Iowa library to create space for high-tech tools

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) – A grant from Google will help the Council Bluffs Public Library create a so-called makerspace, where people can make use of high-tech tools like a 3D printer. The library’s foundation recently was awarded the $34,600 grant from the Internet company. The Daily Nonpareil reports the foundation has agreed to match Google’s contribution to help cover costs.

A librarian says details about the project are still being worked out. But he says officials hope to start reconfiguring a room on the library’s second floor to be the new makerspace by next year.
