Iowa’s chief justice to address Legislature in annual speech

News

January 14th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – Iowa’s chief justice is expected to address the Legislature in the annual “state of the judiciary” address. Chief Justice Mark Cady of the Iowa Supreme Court is scheduled to speak Wednesday morning before a joint session at the Capitol.

Gov. Terry Branstad’s proposed budget shows the judicial branch is requesting more than $182 million for the fiscal year that begins July 1. That’s an increase of more than $8 million over the current year. In past speeches, Cady has emphasized the importance of securing the money. He has said it helps the state’s court system improve efficiency and attract the best employees.

Building with a Future Focus: Iowa’s Residential Revolution

News

January 14th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa – It’s been a steadily changing trend in Iowa – and more often, there’s a focus on the future and quality of life in residential construction and renovations. According to Siobhan Spain, program director for the Best Development Awards, at 1000 Friends of Iowa, the state has one of the largest housing stocks in need of attention in the nation. The group now is honoring those communities and residents addressing the issue with an eye on social, economic and environmental sustainability.

“These ‘smart growth’ principles that we acknowledge in the winners this year really understand the connection between residential and the community,” she said. “And they really inspire the community that they can really make a change for the better.”

Among the winners of this year’s Best Development Awards is Madison Flats in Des Moines, an apartment building on a formerly contaminated site that’s hoped to spark further development in that neighborhood.

Other awards for commercial, civic and mixed-use developments went to projects in Slater, Stanton, West Union and Woodbine. Spain noted that this was the first year of recognizing stormwater management, which can be key in flood mitigation. “That went to the Green Alley program up in Dubuque,” she said. “So, that’s exciting and that’s really great to be able to acknowledge wonderful projects that are happening in Iowa that focus on flood management and wastewater.”

Spain said Dubuque’s 12-phase, 20-year project retrofits alley infrastructure within the Bee Branch Watershed with what is known as “pervious” pavement. It allows stormwater to soak into the ground, reducing runoff by up to 80 percent. Award information is online at new.1000friendsofiowa.org.

Fatal C.Bluffs fire on Jan. 2nd caused by electrical issues

News

January 14th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

A fire at a home in Council Bluffs on Jan. 2nd that claimed the life of a woman who lived in the basement, was caused by an  electrical problem. The Omaha World-Herald says investigators have determined that an electrical malfunction started near the bed next to an exterior wall. 49-year old Dorothy Ceballos, of Council Bluffs, who was unable to escape the fire in the basement, died from injuries she suffered in the home located at 1302 Seventh Avenue. Fire officials say Ceballos died from smoke inhalation.

Authorities say the area where the fire started was full of electronic equipment, including radio and stereo equipment, all plugged into one outlet via a power strip. It’s unclear though, which particular piece of equipment malfunctioned to cause the fire. Several devices melted together. Investigators called the blaze accidental.

Ceballos was not related to the homeowner, Mary Brown, and did not live at the residence. The woman was an acquaintance of one of Brown’s family members who was not at the house at the time of the fire. Brown and a relative escaped the fire uninjured. A 71-year-old man in the house was treated and released at a Council Bluffs hospital.

Uthoff’s shot lifts Iowa to 77-75 win at Minnesota

Sports

January 14th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Jarrod Uthoff’s pull-up jumper with 3.5 seconds left Tuesday lifted Iowa to a 77-75 victory over Minnesota, sealed when DeAndre Mathieu’s full-court drive for a layup at the buzzer was ruled a split-second late. Uthoff had 16 of his career-high 22 points in the second half for the Hawkeyes (12-5, 3-1 Big Ten), who squandered a 17-point lead and found themselves trailing by four on Joey King’s 3-pointer with 3:11 remaining.

Carlos Morris scored 20 points for the Gophers (11-7, 0-5), who have lost four of their five conference games by five points or fewer. The officials went to the monitor after Mathieu’s race to tie the game, but his double clutch as he approached the defense in the lane delayed his release of the ball just long enough to negate the basket.
