Iowa State Uses Strong Second Half to Beat TCU

AMES, Iowa (AP) – Georges Niang scored 23 points, floor leader Monte Morris added 16 and No. 15 Iowa State pulled away in the second half to beat TCU 83-66 on Saturday.

Iowa State (16-4, 6-2 Big 12) ran its homecourt winning streak to 19 with its first double-digit win in conference play. The Cyclones’ previous five league victories had been decided by a total of 18 points.

Bryce Dejean-Jones scored 16 points and Dustin Hogue had 12 for the Cyclones, who won their second straight after a humbling loss at Texas Tech a week ago. TCU (14-7, 1-7) stayed close for a half, causing some edginess among the Cyclone faithful, but Iowa State finally took control with a pair of big runs in the second half.

Trey Zeigler led TCU with 14 points and Chris Washburn scored 11.

Ex-Iowa coach pleads not guilty to sex with student

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) — A former coach and director of a program for at-risk students at Sioux City’s North High School has pleaded not guilty to having sex with a student. The Sioux City Journal reports  that 29-year-old Erick Deleon, of Sioux City, entered the plea Friday in Woodbury County District Court. He is charged with one count of sexual exploitation by a school employee. His trial has been set for May 12.

Court documents say Deleon sent sexually explicit text messages and engaging in sexual acts with a 16-year-old female student. Authorities say the girl was one of his students. Deleon also was an assistant boys soccer coach at West High School.

No. 5 Wisconsin’s Kaminsky scores 24 in 74-63 win vs Iowa

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Frank Kaminsky had 24 points and nine rebounds to lead No. 5 Wisconsin to a 74-63 win over Iowa on Saturday. Nigel Hayes scored 14 points and Sam Dekker and Josh Gasser each added 11 for the Badgers (18-2, 6-1 Big Ten). Wisconsin had 21 second chance points to win its fifth straight against the Hawkeyes (13-8, 4-4).

Aaron White scored 15 points to lead Iowa, which has dropped three straight games. White was limited in practice this week after injuring his shoulder last week against Purdue. Wisconsin pulled away midway through the second half when Iowa went nearly seven minutes without a field goal. Gabriel Olaseni added 12 points for Iowa.

Clarinda authorities issue Snow Ordinance reminder

With the chance of accumulating snowfall to occur in Clarinda later this weekend the Clarinda Police Department would like to remind the citizens of Clarinda about the emergency snow ordinance. The ordinance states that; no person shall park any motor vehicle or other apparatus upon any street of the city that will obstruct the removal of snow when there has been an accumulation of two (2) inches or more.

Any vehicle left parked on any street in violation of this ordinance may be impounded, and the registered owner of the vehicle will be subject to a $15.00 parking fine, and payment of all applicable towing and storage fees in order for the vehicle to be released.

Winter Storm Warning expanded to most of Iowa

The National Weather Service has expanded the WINTER STORM WARNING for parts of southern and central Iowa to include most of the state. The Warning is in effect from 6-pm Sat. (1/31) until 9-pm Sunday (2/1), for Monona-Harrison-Shelby and Pottawattamie Counties in the KJAN listening area, and from 7-pm Sat. thru 9-pm Sunday for Cass, Adair, Adams, Audubon, Guthrie, Dallas, Sac, Crawford, Carroll, Ringgold, Taylor and Union Counties. In the warned area, 7-to 10-inches of snow are possible by Sunday night.

Winds will turn to the northeast early Sunday morning at 10-to 20-mph and gust to near 30-mph by Sunday afternoon. Roads are expected to become snow covered and hazardous. Blowing snow Sunday will reduce visibility and make it difficult for state and county road crews to keep the roads clear. Travel on in the event of an emergency. If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food and water in your vehicle in case you become stranded.

The rain-snow mix has changed over to all snow in western Iowa as of mid-day, Saturday. Heavy snow is possible overnight, with some additional light accumulation on Sunday. In addition to the WINTER STORM WARNING, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for far southwest Iowa from 9-p.m. Saturday until 6-pm Sunday for Fremont and Mills Counties.

Motel Robbery in Council Bluffs Saturday Morning

Council Bluffs Police responded to the scene of an armed robbery of a motel early Saturday morning.  Officers responded at 12:52am to the Days Inn Motel at 3208 South 7th Street in Council Bluffs.  The suspect entered the lobby area of the motel and pointed a semi-automatic handgun at the clerk on duty.  He then reached over the counter and took an undetermined amount of cash from the register drawer and fled on foot.

The clerk saw the suspect leave the scene in a white SUV and an officer in the area spotted the vehicle northbound on South Expressway.  Officers attempted to stop the vehicle when a pursuit began with the suspect throwing cash and clothing out of the car window and ramming a police cruiser in the process.  The suspect eventually left the vehicle in the 2700 block of South 6th Street and fled on foot.

At 1:11am the 911 center received a call from a female subject stating that her husband had just come home and wanted to report being assaulted and having his 2011 Kia Sorrento stolen.  Officers responded to the residence where he was transported to the Criminal Investigation Division for questioning.  It was later determined that the man was involved in the robbery and assault of a peace officer and was booked into Pottawattamie County Corrections.  The investigation is still ongoing.
