Bluffs coffee shop robbed Wed. evening

News

February 26th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

Police in Council Bluffs say no injuries were reported following the robbery Wednesday evening of a coffee shop at 3030 West Broadway Street. Officials say two men, one Hispanic, the other Caucasian, entered the Scooters Coffee Shop at around 7-p.m. The Hispanic male approached an employee behind the counter and pointed a black, semi-automatic handgun at her and at the register, but made no demands. A second employee behind the counter had her back turned away from the suspect and was not aware of what was happening until the first employee called her name.

The two female employees tried to open both registers, but one would not open. After the second register was opened, the women offered the contents to the suspect, who then ordered the women to place the money in a bag. When no bag could be found, the suspect went around the counter and grabbed the till, which contained an undetermined amount of cash.

Both suspects then fled out the door and were last seen running northwest, toward Avenue A. Both men were between 18 and 20-years of age. The Hispanic male wore gloves, and all black outer clothing consisting of a sweatshirt with the hood up, and a black handkerchief partially covering his face. The Caucasian suspect wore a bright blue hooded sweatshirt, gloves and a ski mask.

Anyone with information about the crime, is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 712-328-7867.

Online car sale scam costs Bluffs man $2k

News

February 26th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

A Council Bluffs man is out $2,000 after a phone scam. The Daily NonPareil says according to Council Bluffs Police Department reports, the 41-year-old man negotiated the purchase of a 2007 Honda Accord off a Craigslist ad, agreeing to pay $2,000. The seller told the man he was stationed at Offutt Air Force Base and was set to be deployed overseas.

Sgt. David Dawson said the seller told the Council Bluffs man to pay another man in Mississippi, wiring the money. The Offutt man told the buyer to list the Money Gram as “sending money to a relative” to avoid higher service fees. Dawson called that tactic a red flag for buyers. After the money was wired the man from Offutt was supposed to bring the Accord to the Council Bluffs man. That didn’t occur.

Dawson said the department will investigate the fraud but once the money is gone there’s little they can do.
