The AHSTW Vikings football team is looking for some new faces to lead the way and build off a very successful 2022 campaign. The Vikings went 10-1 and lost in the Class A Quarterfinals to a solid Lynville-Sully team in driving rainstorm to end last season. There are some big shoes to fill but coach GG Harris is encouraged by the leadership he’s seen from the new guys.

Luke Sternberg is a key piece back for the Vikings after rushing for 1,791 yards and 25 touchdowns as just a sophomore. Coach Harris said they will start with the ground game and build around it.

Coach Harris said one skill strength this team should possess is speed. He thinks that they can use that team speed to their advantage on both sides of the ball.

The Vikings are scheduled to open up the season on August 25th at home against the Tri-Center Trojans.

Listen to the full interview with Coach Harris below.

Hawkeyes Golf add Josh Lundmark

IOWA CITY, Iowa – University of Iowa men’s golf welcomes graduate transfer Josh Lundmark for the 2023-24 season. Lundmark joins the Hawkeyes from Cornell University and was a high school teammate of Iowa’s Mac McClear.

“We are excited to welcome Josh to the squad,” said head coach Tyler Stith. “He brings a wealth of experience and leadership to the team. Josh is a competitor and will elevate the performance of his teammates.”

Lundmark led Cornell in stroke average each of the past two seasons. Last year, he averaged 73.57 strokes over 23 rounds, including eight rounds at or below par. Lundmark, who earned a spot in the lineup each year at Cornell, carded a team-best 18-hole round of 67 (-4) at the Columbia Autumn Invitational, where he finished fifth. That was one of four top-10 finishes for the season.

Prior to Cornell, Lundmark was high school teammates with McClear at Hinsdale Central in Hinsdale, Illinois. The duo helped lead the school to three consecutive Illinois Class 3A State Championships. Lundmark was named a Transamerica Scholastic Junior All-American in 2018 and became the top-ranked amateur in Illinois during the summer of 2019.

Hawkeyes Rout Croatia All-Stars

DUBROVNIK, Croatia – The University of Iowa women’s basketball team dropped the Croatia All-Stars, 109-29, in its final contest of the Foreign Tour. All 12 Hawkeyes that suited up scored in Sunday night’s contest.

Sophomore Hannah Stuelke lead all scorers with 20 points, eight rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Stuelke shot 8-of-11 from the charity stripe as well. Taylor McCabe was Iowa’s second leading scorer with 15 points, shooting 5-of-8 from 3-point range. McCabe added three assists, three rebounds, and a block in 21 minutes of action. Addi O’Grady and AJ Ediger both notched double figures with 12 and 11 points, respectively. 11 Hawkeyes scored six or more points in the game.

The Hawkeyes shot 43-of-76 from the field and hit nine three pointers. Iowa assisted on 30 shots compared to the Croatia All-Stars’ seven. Iowa was +33 on the glass. The Hawkeyes’ defense was stingy, limiting the Croatia All-Stars to 18% from the field and 12.5% from 3-point range.

“It was great to see Hannah (Stuelke) get some confidence at the free throw line, and I think Molly (Davis) was fantastic again tonight,” said P. Sue Beckwith, MD, Iowa women’s basketball coach Lisa Bluder. “I thought we’ve had a successful trip. Honestly, the women kept their composure, focus, and intensity when they didn’t have to. I really admire that as a coach, and we had 10 great practices before we came here. The defensive tweaks we made this summer, we really like. We think they will be effective this year.”

The Hawkeyes are set to return to campus on Aug. 16.

Applications now being taken for the next Ms. Wheelchair Iowa

News

August 14th, 2023 by admin

Iowa women who use wheelchairs are being recruited to take part in the Ms. Wheelchair Iowa Contest this fall. The winner will spend the next year as the state’s chief advocate for people with disabilities. State director Angie Hulsebus says it’s not a beauty pageant, but a contest based on the person’s achievements since the onset of the disability. There are only a few key criteria to apply.

You’ll also need to be able to attract sponsors to raise money for expenses, including the trip to next year’s Ms. Wheelchair America event where you’ll represent Iowa at the national level. It’s an exceptional chance to advocate, educate and empower, Hulsebus says, through all kinds of opportunities.

Applying is as easy as sending the program an email and they’ll send you back an application.

Hulsebus was Ms. Wheelchair Iowa 2009 and says it was one of her crowning achievements.

This year’s Ms. Wheelchair Iowa Contest will be held October 28th at the Hearst Center For Performing Arts in Cedar Falls. Contact the program at: mswheelchairiowaprogram@gmail.com or through Facebook at Ms. Wheelchair Iowa Program.
