DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – Josh Carter scored 18 points and Dubuque Wahlert held off a late charge to beat Le Mars 46-38 Saturday and win its second consecutive Class 3A state championship.

Carter’s 12 points in the final 5 1/2 minutes, including a 3-pointer and 7-for-8 free throw shooting, enabled the Golden Eagles (18-9) to keep the Bulldogs at bay and give the school its fifth basketball title.

Nolan Timp scored nine points for Wahlert and Cordell Pemsl added eight points and eight rebounds for a team toughened by a schedule made up mostly of larger Class 4A schools.

All-tournament captain Tyler Borchers’ 14 points and eight rebounds led Le Mars (22-5), which reached the championship game for the first time since 1946. Tyler Paulson and Pete Meis each had eight points Le Mars.

Carter’s scoring was critical because Pemsl, a 6-foot-8 junior and leading the team with a 17.8 scoring average, got into early foul trouble and eventually fouled out.

Le Mars ran off the first six points of the fourth quarter to chop an 11-point deficit to 32-27 on Borchers’ two free throws with 5:47 remaining. That’s when Carter went to work.

He sank two free throws and dropped in a 3 from the left corner to take the lead to 37-27. When Le Mars drew to 41-37 on two more Borchers’ free throws, Carter stayed aggressive with the ball, drew fouls and sank 5 of 6 free throws to wrap it up.

Le Mars overcame Borchers’ early foul trouble to take a 16-12 halftime lead. But the Bulldogs shot just 1-for-8 in the third quarter, Wahlert went on a 17-1 run and the Golden Eagles led the rest of the way. They forced four turnovers during that burst, got a couple of buckets inside from Pemsl, who has said he’ll sign with the University of Iowa, and back-to-back 3s from Riley Till and Timp.

Wahlert’s five titles are tied for the fifth most of all time in the state.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Iowa State’s unflappable bunch of comeback kids did it one more time. Georges Niang scored 19 points, Abdel Nader made the go-ahead foul shots with 48 seconds to go, and the No. 13 Cyclones rallied from a 17-point second-half hole to beat ninth-ranked Kansas 70-66 in the Big 12 Tournament championship Saturday night.

It was the fifth straight game — including all three in the tournament — that the Cyclones rallied from a double-digit deficit, prompting Niang to dub them the “Comeback Kids.” Nader finished with 13 points, and Jameel McKay and Monte Morris had 11 each for the Cyclones (25-8), who also knocked off the Jayhawks on their way to winning the title a year ago.

JUPITER, Fla. (AP) — Minnesota Twins prospect Miguel Sano hit a long, two-run homer Saturday in a 6-3 win over the St. Louis Cardinals. Sano, a 21-year-old third baseman, missed last season because of Tommy John surgery. He connected off Cardinals reliever Tyler Lyons for a deep drive to left field. Twins starter Ricky Nolasco allowed one run in three innings.

Michael Wacha pitched three scoreless innings in his second outing for the Cardinals. He allowed two singles and struck out two, extending his scoreless streak to five innings. Randal Grichuk hit his team-leading third homer for St. Louis and Mark Reynolds hit his second. Jason Heyward and Yadier Molina each had two hits.

Magneurius Sierra, at 18 the Cardinals’ top position prospect, played in his first spring training game. He went 0 for 3 and made an error in left field.

A rural Pottawattamie County family’s estate has donated a huge sum of money to the Neola Fire and Rescue Department. According to the Daily NonPareil, the Helen Darrington estate made a donation of $102,000 to Neola Fire and Rescue. Fire Chief Bill Schierbrock said the Darringtons were a family the department responded to a few times over the years, and the family had always donated to the department’s fundraisers in the past.

The news shocked the members of the grateful volunteer department. The money will go towards paying off a new rescue truck the department purchased.

Arbitrator finds for Iowa employees on health care issue

News

March 14th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — An arbitrator has sided with Iowa state employees who objected to a state proposal that would have forced them to pay up to 20 percent of their monthly health care premiums. The arbitrator sided with the employees’ union on Saturday, saying the employee union’s proposal to instead pay $20 a month toward their health care premiums was the most reasonable.

The wage proposals of both the state and union leaders were much the same. State employees will get a pay hike of about 6 percent over two years. Union president Danny Homan on Saturday lauded the decision, saying it will “help put money in the pockets of state employees.” But Gov. Terry Branstad’s office says the decision will “cost the Iowa taxpayers an additional $24 million.”
