Area School Board meetings set for Monday evening

A few area school districts have their monthly Board of Education meetings set for Monday evening. In Anita, the CAM School Board will gather for a 6:30-p.m. session in the High School Media Center. During their meeting, the Board will discuss and/or act on: Open enrollment applications; Resignations; and, the 2013-14 Audit report. The CAM Board will also review their proposed budget for 2015-16 and set the date and time for a Public Hearing on the 2015-16 Budget. They’re also set to consider a tennis sharing arrangement with the Atlantic School District.

In Audubon, the School Board meets at 7-p.m. in their boardroom at the high school. During the meeting, the Board will act on: Approving a contract for renovation of the track; Setting the dates for Public Hearings on the Budget Plan and Budget Amendment; Approving Early Retirement applications and other administrative matters. And, prior to an exempt session for strategizing over collective bargaining negotiations, the Audubon School Board will discuss a School Board Election timeline, and receive a school finance update.

An in Elk Horn, the Exira-EKH School Board will meet in the Family and Consumer Science Room at the High School, beginning at 7-p.m. On their agenda, is approval of contracts for various coach/assistant coaches, and a Middle School para-educator. They’ll also discuss setting the date for a Public Hearing in April, with regard to approval of the 2015-16 Exira-EHK School District Budget.

OWI arrest Sunday morning in Red Oak

A Red Oak man was arrested early this (Sunday) morning, on an OWI charge. Red Oak Police say 39-year old Michael Wade McFarland was taken into custody at around 3-a.m. at the intersection of east Nuckols Street and Highland Avenue. He was charged with OWI/2nd offense and brought to the Montgomery County Jail, where McFarland’s bond was set at $2,000.

Red Flag Warning for southwest Iowa today (Sunday)

The National Weather Service says extreme fire danger conditions will be in place across the entire KJAN listening area from Noon today (Sunday) through late this evening, due to very low humidity (around 19-percent) and gusty southwesterly winds of 20-to 40-miles per hour. Outdoor burning is highly discouraged due to the fact fields and grassy areas are very dry and will create an effect of adding fuel to a fire.

Any controlled, outdoor burns that are started may quickly become explosive and out of control, spreading very rapidly, putting lives and property in danger. A Red Flag warning means the critical fire weather condition are occurring or will occur.

In addition, a Fire Weather Watch will be in effect on Monday afternoon and evening in the southwest part of the state (Pottawattamie, Mills, Montgomery, Fremont and Page Counties), meaning critical fire weather conditions are expected. The Watch could be upgraded to a Red Flag Warning tomorrow, so stay tuned for further updates.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — An arbitrator has sided with Iowa state employees who objected to a state proposal that would have forced them to pay up to 15 percent of their monthly health care premiums. The arbitrator sided with the employees’ union yesterday, saying the employee union’s proposal to instead pay $20 a month toward their health care premiums was the most reasonable. Republican Governor Terry Branstad’s office says the decision will “cost the Iowa taxpayers an additional $24 million.”

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) — A Sioux City woman has pleaded guilty to helping Jamal Dean flee after he shot a Sioux City police officer. The Sioux City Journal reports that 34-year-old Evette Morris-Hernandez entered her plea Friday in federal court. She is one of eight people indicted for their roles in helping Dean leave town after he shot Sioux City police Officer Kevin McCormick April 29th, 2013.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A former Des Moines police officer who served more than two years in prison following a string of arrests is back behind bars. The Register reports that officer Brandon Singleton tested positive for methamphetamine twice this month, prompting a parole violation complaint that put him back in the Polk County Jail after he was paroled on January 13th.

WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) — A house fire in Waterloo has sent two people to the hospital. The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier reports that firefighters rescued a man and a woman from a burning Waterloo home around 3:30 yesterday morning.

EVELYN ALMA NELSEN, 98, of Oakland died Saturday, March 14th at the Oakland Manor Nursing Home.  Funeral Services for EVELYN ALMA NELSEN will be held Wednesday, March 18th at 10:30am at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Avoca.  Pauley-Jones Funeral Home in Avoca has the arrangements.

Visitation with family greeting friends will be held Tuesday, March 17th from 5:00pm-8:00pm at the funeral home.

Burial will be in the Graceland Cemetery in Avoca.

EVELYN ALMA NELSEN is survived by:

Daughters: Karen (Steve) Guyer of Hancock. Cheryl (Larry) Billings of Hancock.

Son: Lowell (Kathy) Nelsen of Vancouver, WA.

Sons-in-law: Eldon “Butch” Popp of Walnut.  Lynn Wirth of Avoca.

Brothers: Delno “Bud” (Betty) Holtz of Avoca.  Clarence (Betty Jean) Holtz of Denver, CO.

Brother-in-law: Melvin (Lola) Hodge of Atlantic.
