Des Moines may seek to be college hoops ‘bubble’ site

Sports

September 18th, 2020 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The structure of how college basketball will be played during the coronavirus pandemic is unclear, but leaders in Des Moines may push for the city to serve as a “bubble” site if that option is chosen. The Des Moines Register reports that leaders are discussing inviting college basketball teams to play early-season games at Wells Fargo Arena. The NCAA basketball season’s start date is Nov. 25.

The “bubble” format is currently being used by the NBA. The NCAA has had recent experience with Des Moines, which hosted first- and second-round games for the 2016 and 2019 men’s Division I tournaments.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Steven Brault pitched a two-hitter for his first career complete game, Gregory Polanco hit a three-run homer and the Pittsburgh Pirates snapped an eight-game skid with a 5-1 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals. St. Louis dropped to third place in the NL Central, 6 1/2 games behind the division-leading Chicago Cubs and one back of the Cincinnati Reds. Brault had never pitched more than seven innings in his previous 43 starts. The Cardinals got their only hits in the third when Kolten Wong and Tommy Edman hit back-to-back singles, with Edman driving in St. Louis’ only run.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — St. Louis Cardinals right-hander Dakota Hudson left his start Thursday night after two innings because of right elbow tightness. Hudson did not allow a run while walking two and giving up one hit against the Pittsburgh Pirates. He is 3-2 with a 2.77 ERA in eight starts this season. The Cardinals entered the night percentage points behind the Cincinnati Reds for second place in the NL Central, 5 ½ games behind the Chicago Cubs. The top two finishers in each division advance to the expanded postseason this year, along with two wild cards.

CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago White Sox have clinched their first playoff berth in 12 years by scoring twice in the seventh inning to rally past the Minnesota Twins, 4-3. Eloy (EE’-loy) Jiménez hit a tiebreaking double that capped a two-run rally in the seventh inning of the White Sox’s 4-3 win over the Twins. José Abreu (ah-BRAY’-oo) homered and drove in the tying run with an infield single, giving him a major league-leading 51 RBIs.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Health officials are telling 10 fans who attended last week’s Kansas City Chiefs game to quarantine after one fan tested positive for COVID-19. Kansas City health officials announced Thursday that a fan who watched the game from a group’s box tested positive the next day. The group was seated in the lower level of the stadium. The Chiefs said in a statement the organization worked Kansas City health officials to find the fans who were possibly exposed. Chiefs officials say contact tracing protocols showed the group were wearing masks when they entered the stadium and pinpointed anyone who had contact with the individual.

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) — The Miami Heat have a two-games-to-none lead in the NBA’s Eastern Conference finals after erasing a 13-point, halftime deficit and closing on a 17-7 run to beat Boston, 106-101. Goran Dragic scored 25 points for the Heat, who are 10-1 this postseason. Bam Adebayo led a big third-quarter rally to finish with 21.

Iowa will not revisit sports cuts despite return of football

Sports

September 17th, 2020 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — The University of Iowa says the Big Ten’s decision to have a fall football season will not impact its decision to eliminate four sports programs. Athletic Director Gary Barta last month announced the elimination of men’s and women’s swimming and diving, men’s tennis and men’s gymnastics. He said the cuts were “100% driven by” the coronavirus pandemic, which caused the postponement of football and tens of millions in lost revenue. On Wednesday, the Big Ten announced that the conference would have a fall football season beginning in late October. Alumni of the Hawkeye programs that were cut held a news conference to call for their reinstatement. But the athletics department says the cuts are “final” and have been supported by the Board of Regents.

Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Brent Suter and three relievers combined on a two-hitter and Ryan Braun hit his 350th career homer, leading the Milwaukee Brewers over the St. Louis Cardinals 6-0 for a doubleheader split. The Cardinals took the opener 4-2 behind Adam Wainwright’s four-hitter. Cardinals manager Mike Shildt ran the team in the opener. He missed the nightcap while serving a one-game suspension, imposed by Major League Baseball after tempers flared during the Brewers’ 18-3 romp Tuesday night. Umpires warned both teams after Braun was hit by a pitch in the fifth inning. He was at the center of the trouble the previous night when he hit Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina in the wrist during a swing.

DETROIT (AP) — Brady Singer was stellar for a second straight start, allowing two hits in six innings, and the Kansas City Royals blanked the Detroit Tigers 4-0. Singer pitched eight one-hit innings in his previous outing at Cleveland. The rookie right-hander struck out the first five Detroit hitters and retired the first 10. Singer struck out eight with one walk. Salvador Perez homered and drove in three runs for the Royals, who have won seven of eight. Tarik Skubal allowed two earned runs and four hits in six innings in this matchup of rookie starters. He struck out eight with no walks.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Now that the Big Ten has a rescheduled kickoff weekend, coaches and players can start the sprint to opening day. Expect a wild ride. After postponing the season in early August, the league’s 14 university presidents and chancellors have given teams five weeks to accomplish what typically takes months. Teams must be ready to kick off by Oct. 24 for the start of a most unusual season.

UNDATED (AP) — The Big Ten is going to give fall football a shot after all. Less than five weeks after postponing fall sports to spring because of the pandemic, the conference changed course. The Big Ten says its Council of Presidents and Chancellors voted unanimously to restart sports. The Big Ten plans to begin its season on Oct. 23 with an eight-game schedule for each team. The development of rapid daily testing for the coronavirus was a major factor in the decision.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs had some unexpected holes pop up on their offensive line heading into Week 1 after Laurent Duvernay-Tardif opted out of the season and Martinas Rankin was slow in returning from a knee injury. But the group that coach Andy Reid put on the field against the Houston Texans came through with aplomb. They helped create holes for Clyde Edwards-Helaire to run for 138 yards and a score, and they allowed Patrick Mahomes to be sacked just once in the 34-20 victory.

NEW YORK (AP) — Basketball star Maya Moore has married Jonathan Irons, the Missouri man she helped work to free from prison after a 22-year-old wrongful conviction. Moore and Irons appeared together on ABC’s “Good Morning America” to discuss their social justice efforts and their relationship. Moore revealed the two were wed earlier this year, after Irons was released on July 1. Moore won four WNBA titles with the Minnesota Lynx. She put her career on hold in 2019 in part to devote more time to Irons’ cause. He was convicted as an 18-year-old on burglary and assault charges that were overturned in March.
