Midwest Sports Headlines: 9/19/20

September 19th, 2020 by Ric Hanson

Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Rookie Dylan Carlson hit a three-run homer to cap a six-run outburst to help the St. Louis Cardinals earn a doubleheader sweep of the Pittsburgh Pirates with a 7-2 victory in the nightcap. The Pirates committed three errors in the sixth, paving the way for Carlson’s second career home run. St. Louis took the opening game 6-5 behind home runs from Kolten Wong and Tyler O’Neill. The Cardinals moved back to .500 with the victory while playing their third doubleheader in five days.

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Jacob Nottingham hit a grand slam and Orlando Arcia added a three-run shot as the Milwaukee Brewers rallied from an early four-run deficit and beat the Kansas City Royals 9-5. Nottingham’s two-out blast to left off Danny Duffy capped a six-run rally in the fourth inning that put the Brewers ahead for good. The comeback had begun when Christian Yelich led off the fourth with his 150th career homer. Kansas City’s Salvador Perez went 4 of 5 with a homer, double, two runs and four RBIs.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields says he felt distraught watching college football on TV last weekend. With the Big Ten’s decision to scrap fall sports in the name of player safety because of the coronavirus pandemic, Fields and his Buckeye teammates were sidelined. That changed this week when the Big Ten reversed course and announced that beginning Oct. 23-24. Fields says the players are grateful the season has been saved and are having fun being on the field together again. Wisconsin quarterback Jack Coan said getting the season back “means everything.”

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Health officials are telling 10 fans who attended last week’s Kansas City Chiefs game to quarantine after one fan tested positive for COVID-19. Kansas City health officials announced Thursday that a fan who watched the game from a group’s box tested positive the next day. The group was seated in the lower level of the stadium. The Chiefs said in a statement the organization worked Kansas City health officials to find the fans who were possibly exposed. Chiefs officials say contact tracing protocols showed the group were wearing masks when they entered the stadium and pinpointed anyone who had contact with the individual.

Atlantic guts out win over Clarinda 7-0

Sports

September 19th, 2020 by admin

The Atlantic Trojans found a way to pull out a win 7-0 over the Clarinda Cardinals on Friday night in Glenwood. In a wild game that included 10 total turnovers the Trojans were able to make just enough plays to grab their third straight win.

The two teams traded blows in the first half and both teams squandered scoring opportunities to leave the game scoreless at the break. The game remained scoreless through three quarters and the Trojans finally hit paydirt on their first possession of the 4th quarter. Grant Sturm thought he broke the scoreboard on the second play of the 4th when Clarinda punted the ball away. Sturm returned the kick 43-yards for a touchdown but the play was called back and a roughing the kicker call gave Clarinda a first down. Sturm got the ball right back for Atlantic, picking off Wyatt Schmitt on the next play to give the Trojans the ball at the 36 yard line. The Trojans then drove down the field and grabbed the lone score of the game with a 14-yard touchdown pass from Caden Anderson to Korey Parrott with 7:36 left in the game. Lane Nelson added the PAT to complete the only score of the game. Atlantic Head Coach Mike McDermott was proud of the effort his team gave all night.

The final three possessions of the game ended with a Grant Sturm interception. The final pick to seal the game came as time expired. Sturm finished the game with four interceptions. Ethan Sturm and Joe Weaver also tallied a pick each in the game. A big moment in the game came in the second quarter as the Cardinals connected on an 83-yard bomb from Wyatt Schmitt to Michael Shull. Grant Sturm never gave up on that play and caught Shull at the 8 yard line. Two plays later the Cardinals fumbled a handoff and the Trojans pounced on the loose ball. After the game Coach McDermott said he has seen that fight from Sturm and the team all season.

Atlantic improves to 3-1 on the season, and extended their win streak to three games. The Trojans are set to travel to Des Moines Christian next week. Clarinda falls to 1-3 on the season and will host Shenandoah in the Page County Super Bowl next week.

Cardinals hold off Pirates 6-5 in Game 1 of doubleheader

Sports

September 18th, 2020 by Ric Hanson

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Kolten Wong hit the second leadoff home run of his career, Tyler O’Neill added a two-run shot and the St. Louis Cardinals slipped past the Pittsburgh Pirates 6-5 in Game 1 of a doubleheader. After scratching out all of four hits in their previous 18 innings, the Cardinals managed eight in seven innings against Trevor Williams and three Pittsburgh relievers to overcome some sloppy defense.

St. Louis committed four errors, including a catcher’s interference call against nine-time Gold Glover winner Yadier Molina that forced home a run in the first. John Ryan Murphy flied out with the bases loaded to end it.

Baseball fans, dinner in the Field of Dreams outfield is now an option

Sports

September 18th, 2020 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – There’s limited outdoor seating available for dining in the outfield featured in the iconic 1989 movie about baseball that was filmed near Dyersville.

That’s site manager Roman Weinberg. “Dinner on the Diamond” is being offered this Friday through Sunday as well as the last weekend in September and two weekends in October. There will be three separate seatings for diners each evening, at 5 p.m., 6:30 and 8 p.m.

The menu is “Iowa inspired” according to Weinberg and it features one reimagined ballpark staple.

Reservations are required. An area near the Field of Dreams site had been tapped as the location of a Major League Baseball game this summer, but those plans were pushed back until 2021 due to the pandemic.

Atlantic rides winning streak into District clash with Clarinda

Sports

September 18th, 2020 by admin

The Atlantic Trojans football team is riding a two-game win streak heading into their contest with the Clarinda Cardinals tonight. After a tough opening loss to Underwood, the Trojans have put together solid performances in wins against Kuemper Catholic and Greene County. They hope to carry that momentum into tonight’s contest. Clarinda is coming off their first win of the season over Red Oak after a couple of tough games to start the season. Cardinals Head Coach Collin Bevins feels like his team has improved each week of the season.

The Cardinals are led by a strong line up front on both sides of the ball and the offense is led by senior receiver Michael Shull and sophomore quarterback Wyatt Schmitt. Atlantic Head Coach Mike McDermott said the Cardinals always play a very physical style of football and the Trojans will need to be strong up front.

The defense has come up with some big plays in the two Trojan victories and Coach McDermott said he expects that veteran group to continue to set the tone.

The Trojan offense has started to achieve some good balance on offense has the season has progressed. Coach Bevins said his team will have to be ready to try to slow down the run game, while also paying attention to some speed on the outside.

We’ll have the Trojans and the Cardinals for you tonight on KJAN. The game is being played at Ram Memorial Field in Glenwood due to the ongoing construction at the Trojan Bowl. Chris Parks and Mike Smith will have the call from Glenwood on AM 1220, FM 101.1, online at kjan.com and live video on KJANTV. Start the evening by hearing an in depth interview with Coach McDermott on Trojan Preview at 4:45 p.m. Our weekly pick ’em show Who’s Gonna Win? will air at 6:00 p.m. followed by the Dvorak Tire and Service pregame show at 6:30 p.m. and kickoff at 7:00 p.m.
