Another chance for Gonzaga to reach Sweet 16 vs. Iowa

Sports

March 22nd, 2015 by Ric Hanson

SEATTLE (AP) — Kevin Pangos insists it’s not pressure that Gonzaga feels to finally get to the second weekend of the NCAA Tournament. It’s hunger to be remembered as the Gonzaga team that snapped the streak of first weekend departures. There may not be a better chance for the second-seeded Bulldogs (33-2) to reach the Sweet 16 than today’s (Sunday’s) matchup with No. 7 seed Iowa. Gonzaga will be playing essentially a home game, just four hours from its campus in an arena where they’re comfortable.

But don’t discredit the Hawkeyes. Iowa (22-11) has road wins this season at North Carolina, Ohio State and Michigan, and was the most impressive of the four winners in Seattle on Friday with its 83-52 blowout of Davidson. And the Hawkeyes can match Gonzaga’s size and athleticism at nearly every position.

Pre-game coverage begins at 5-p.m. on KJAN, with the tip-off at around 6:10.

Here is the latest Iowa news from The Associated Press

DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) — There are some Democrats in Iowa who aren’t all that “Ready for Hillary.” So far, there’s little evidence they’re ready for Martin O’Malley, either. The former Maryland governor says, “I think it’s because they haven’t met me yet.” O’Malley spent this past weekend campaigning in Iowa.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Two Polk County women are suing the city of Des Moines over its use of automated traffic cameras. The Des Moines Register reports that Sarah Brooks and Michelle Bullock are seeking class action status for their lawsuit, filed against the city and Gatso USA, which runs the traffic cameras. The lawsuit says the city’s use of the cameras violates their fundamental right to travel granted in the U.S. and Iowa constitutions.

LAKE MILLS, Iowa (AP) — The Lake Mills School Board is expected to soon pick a new superintendent. The Mason City Globe Gazette reports that the board could make a decision on the district’s next superintendent by early next week.

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) — The trial of a former Council Bluffs high school math teacher accused of sexually abusing two students has been delayed. The 29-year-old Daugherty was arrested in January following reports that he had a sexual relationship with a 14-year-old girl who was his student. The Council Bluffs Daily Nonpareil reports he was arrested again in February after a second student reported abuse. Daugherty resigned from his teaching position at Thomas Jefferson High School on February 3rd.

N Iowa tries to make new history; L’ville tries to stop it

March 21st, 2015 by Ric Hanson

SEATTLE (AP) – The players who put Northern Iowa hoops on the map are all gone, replaced by others who are trying to leave their own successful stamp on the program.  The new group is reminded, almost daily, of the magic of 2010, when the Panthers knocked off Kansas to make it to the Sweet 16.  Northern Iowa hasn’t been that far since, and the players who are there now have to remind themselves that they are not trying to repeat the past.

Led by senior center Seth Tuttle, the Panthers are a No. 5 seed in the East Region. But they are still favored by 2 1/2 points in Sunday’s game against Rick Pitino and the fourth-seeded Louisville Cardinals, a coach and program that know a little bit about perennial success.

Tip-time for the game is 8:40-p.m., Sunday, Central Time.

ST. LOUIS (AP) – Ohio State clinched its first NCAA wrestling title before the final round began.
The Buckeyes had 94 points and a 10-point lead over Iowa with an event-high three competitors remaining after lower places were decided earlier Saturday. Iowa had one competitor remaining and could earn no more than six points. Edinboro was third with 75 1-2 points followed by Missouri with 69 1-2, Cornell with 67 1-2 and four-time defending champion Penn State with 63 1-2. Sixteen schools had at least one competitor in the finals.

The match order starts at 149 points and concludes at 141 pounds, where Logan Stieber of Ohio State was attempting to be just the fourth to win four individual titles. He would join Kyle Dake of Cornell (2010-13), Cael Sanderson of Iowa State (1999-2002), and Pat Smith of Oklahoma State (1990-92, 1994).

Wainwright pitches 4 scoreless in first spring start

JUPITER, Fla. (AP) — Adam Wainwright pitched four innings of four-hit ball in his spring training debut, and the St. Louis Cardinals scored in the bottom of the ninth to beat an Atlanta Braves’ split squad 1-0 Saturday. Wainwright walked one and struck out three. His first start was delayed after he sustained a mild abdominal strain early in camp.

Cardinals right fielder Jason Heyward grounded into a double play and singled to right against his former team. Carlos Martinez, bidding for a spot in the Cardinals’ rotation, followed Wainwright with three solid innings. Atlanta’s Chien-Ming Wang allowed three hits in 4 2-3 innings. Wang, a 19-game winner with the New York Yankees, is trying to make the Braves after not pitching in the majors since 2013.

Joey Terdoslavich turned an unassisted double play in the seventh when he picked up a slow roller and tagged out Yadier Molina between home and third and then tagged Dean Anna sliding into third.

Hawkeyes 1 win away from elusive Sweet 16 berth

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — After 15 years at Iowa, coach Lisa Bluder is just a win away from her first trip to the Sweet 16. But if the Hawkeyes don’t play better against Miami than they did against American, their season might end just like the previous 14 have.

Iowa (25-7) will host the 11th-seeded Hurricanes (20-12) on Sunday in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Miami pulled off an upset Friday when it knocked off Washington 86-80. The Eagles nearly did the same to Iowa, which needed nine 3s to hold off American 75-67.

Carroll man charged w/vehicular homicide in connection w/Nov. 2014 crash

News

March 21st, 2015 by Ric Hanson

A man from Carroll County faces a Felony, Vehicular Homicide by OWI charge, in connection with a Nov. 2014 accident just north of Coon Rapids, that took the life of a passenger in his vehicle. The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office issued an arrest warrant Friday for 32-year old Jason Michael Watson, of Carroll. The man was taken into custody and was being held in the Carroll County Jail on $75,000 bond.
A complaint filed in Carroll County District Court alleges Watson did unlawfully and unintentionally cause the death of 43-year old Evon Eastman, of Moorhead, MN, by operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of an alcoholic beverage or drugs or a combination of such substances, and while having an alcohol concentration of .08 or more.
Officials say Watson was driving a 1998 Ford Explorer southbound on Velvet Avenue at around 7:30-p.m. on Nov. 5th, 2014, when he lost control of the SUV, causing it to roll several times. Eastman was ejected as the vehicle rolled over. She died from her injuries at the hospital in Carroll.  Watson suffered significant injuries in the crash and was later transported from Carroll by helicopter to a hospital in Des Moines.
