Rebekah Topham and Alyx Flippin, a pair of senior long distance runners from Griswold will continue to run in college. The pair signed National Letters of Intent yesterday.
Topham signed a letter of intent to run both track and cross country at Wichita State. Topham is a four-time individual cross country state champion and has won eight state track titles.
Flippin signed a letter to run for Central Missouri.
Both were members of the Tigers 2012 cross country and track state championship teams.
SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) – The grieving family of an officer has bought his police dog from the Sioux City Police Department. The Sioux City Journal reports that Sgt. Jay Fleckenstein died Friday of natural causes at his home. He was 39.
The department bought the dog, a Belgian Malinois named “Eik,” from Fleckenstein in 2009. The officer had raised and trained Eik since he was a puppy. A police news release says the purchase agreement included an option that Fleckenstein’s family would be able to buy back Eik if Fleckenstein were to leave the department for any reason.
Eik had nearly six years on duty with Fleckenstein. The dog would have been required to be recertified before returning to service with another officer.
A man police identified as a transient was arrested early this (Thursday) morning, in Council Bluffs, during an investigation into the theft of a vehicle. Bluffs Police spokesman Benjamin Roth says at around 2-a.m., officers were dispatched to the Bucky’s store at 2713 South 24th Street, in reference to a stolen vehicle that had just occurred. The vehicle had been left running while its occupants entered the business.
While in the store, someone entered the vehicle and stole it from the parking lot. Within minutes of the initial dispatched call, a deputy for the Pottawattamie County Sheriff’s Department located the vehicle belonging to 26-year old Leslie Ventura, of Sioux Falls, SD. Police stopped the car in the 3500 block of 4th Avenue.
The driver, identified as 33-year old Ryan Scott Beers, was taken into custody without incident, and charged with theft 2nd. The Council Bluffs Police Department reminds you not to leave their vehicles running while entering businesses, as it makes an easy target for thefts such as this one.
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) -The U.S. Olympic Team Trials are returning to Iowa City in 2016. USA Wrestling spokesman Gary Abbott told The Associated Press on Wednesday that the meet staged to set the American team headed to the 2016 Rio Games will be held at the University of Iowa next April. The U.S. staged the trials in Iowa City, home of the nationally prominent Iowa Hawkeyes, to sellout crowds back in 2012.
The Americans won a pair of gold medals in London later that year, including a dominant showing by star Jordan Burroughs. Burroughs is expected to headline the latest crop of wrestlers competing for a spot on the team for Rio.

Brisk ticket sales could lead to a new attendance mark at this week’s Drake Relays. The all-time attendance mark of 45 thousand 838 was set two years ago. Dave Haskin is an associate athletic director at Drake. He says they’re very encouraged with how people have been responding to the event and they look forward to a great end to the Relays week. Haskin says the biggest growth in ticket sales has been for the Friday night session which was first added to the schedule back in 2006.
There are still tickets to the Saturday session available right now but Haskin says they are on pace for a 50th straight sellout, and fans shouldn’t wait until the last minute to purchase their tickets. Haskin says tickets for the first session in the stadium today (Thursday), are five dollars.

Iowa offensive coordinator Greg Davis says the Hawkeye offense won’t change with new starting quarterback C.J. Beathard but they will take advantage of his strengths. After two seasons as the backup to Jake Rudock Beathard was named Iowa’s starting quarterback just days after a Taxslayer Bowl loss to Tennessee.
He says they have done some things different in the passing game that they think fit Beathard, in terms of trying to stretch the field, so there will likely be more of those kinds of things. Davis says they will try to take advantage of Beathard’s arm by stetching the field more in the passing game.
He says he hopes the threat of the deep ball will help out a run game that struggled for much of last season. Davis says Beathard does a good job of reading defenses and will have no trouble changing the play at the line of scrimmage when needed.
The Hawkeyes close out spring drills with an open practice on Saturday.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Kolten Wong homered and drove in the tiebreaking run with a double in the eighth inning to lift the St. Louis Cardinals to a 7-5 victory over the Washington Nationals on Wednesday night. Wong finished 3 for 4 with three RBIs. He had a two-run homer in the second inning and a single in the fourth.
Jon Jay drew a one-out walk off Blake Treinen (0-2) in the eighth and moved to third on Yadier Molina’s single. Wong then sliced a double down the left-field line, scoring Jay to break a 5-5 tie. Matt Adams added a solo homer in the ninth off Rafael Martin to close the scoring.
Kevin Siegrist (1-0) pitched 1 1-3 scoreless innings and Trevor Rosenthal got the last three outs for his fifth save. St. Louis won for the sixth time in seven games.
