Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

BALTIMORE (AP) — Patrick Mahomes put on a scintillating show while outperforming Lamar Jackson, and the Kansas City Chiefs deftly played the role of defending Super Bowl champions in a 34-20 thumping of the Baltimore Ravens. Just about everything Mahomes did worked against an overmatched Baltimore defense that had allowed only two touchdowns in its first two games. Mahomes threw four touchdown passes to help the Chiefs emphatically ended the Ravens’ 14-game regular season winning streak while extending their own run to 12 games, including playoffs. Jackson is 21-4 as the Ravens’ starting quarterback, with three of those losses to Mahomes and the Chiefs.

UNDATED (AP) — It took one week for the Big 12 to bring just a little more strangeness to the year 2020. Five-time defending conference champion Oklahoma opened league play with a shocking home loss to Kansas State, perhaps opening the door for another program to finally to step in and claim the title. Iowa State can put Oklahoma’s season on the ropes Saturday when the Cyclones host the Sooners. Iowa State beat the Sooners in 2017 and lost to them by a point in 2019.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Royals spent the 60-game season in 2020 saying farewell to longtime outfielder Alex Gordon, one of the linchpins of their back-to-back World Series runs, and welcome to the young core they hope will take them back there. Brady Singer nearly threw a no-hitter in his abbreviated rookie year. Fellow right-hander Kris Bubic made 10 starts and began to figure things out by the end of September. And their young bullpen, which was an abject failure last season, took massive strides from summer camp to the final out of the season Sunday with an eye toward the future.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Minnesota Twins were determined to defend their division title and start this unusual postseason at home, even if the audience at Target Field this week will be confined to family members and cardboard cutouts. The ease and predictability of playing in their own ballpark during this virus-altered year clearly made a difference to the Twins. They had a 24-7 record at home, the best such mark in baseball. Minnesota hosts Houston in a best-of-three American League wild card series that starts on Tuesday. The Astros were 9-23 on the road, the third-worst record in the major leagues.

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) — Patrick Maroon has joined elite company by winning the Stanley Cup in consecutive seasons with different teams. Maroon is the only member of the champion Tampa Bay Lightning to win it last year with the St. Louis Blues. He’s the eighth player to do it in NHL history and first since Claude Lemieux in the 1990s to get his name on the Cup in consecutive years. Corey Stillman went back to back in 2004 and 2006 after the lockout prevented the trophy from being awarded in 2005. Maroon is one of several additions to the Lightning that helped them finally win it all.

JaQuan Bailey named Big 12 Co-Defensive Player of the Week

Sports

September 28th, 2020 by admin

IRVING, Texas – Iowa State senior defensive end JaQuan Bailey was named the Big 12 Co-Defensive Player of the Week, announced today by the Big 12 Conference.

Bailey, a native of Jacksonville, Fla, had a monster game in Iowa State’s 37-34 victory at TCU on Saturday. The senior set or tied four Iowa State school records, including equaling school single-game marks in sacks (3.5) and TFL (4.0).

Bailey registered all of his sacks in the first half for a loss of 30 yards. He also had seven tackles and a strip sack where he recovered the fumble, setting up an ISU touchdown late in the second quarter.

Bailey’s career day helped him eclipse Iowa State career records in sacks (22.0) and TFL (36.5). He currently ranks in the top-10 nationally in both categories.

Atlantic’s Engler chooses Iowa Central to continue softball career

Sports

September 28th, 2020 by admin

Atlantic star pitcher Olivia Engler announced this past week that she will continue her academic and softball career at Iowa Central Community College. Engler said the choice came down to Iowa Central and Indian Hills.

Engler is coming off a very strong junior season where she posted a 14-2 record and had a 1.10 ERA. She finished the season with 134 strikeouts and walked just 28. Opponents only hit .160 against Engler on the season. Engler said Iowa Central will use her in the circle. She said taking the next step to college ball is something she has dreamed about for a long time.

Engler has one more year with the Trojans next summer and she is looking forward to leaving it all out there.

Engler was very strong offensively as well last season, hitting .471 with 8 doubles and 24 RBIs. Listen to the full interview with Olivia below.

Iowa State’s Matt Campbell on the Big-12 Teleconference

Sports

September 28th, 2020 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – The Oklahoma-Iowa State football series has been lopsided but it has been more competitive since Matt Campbell took over the Cyclone program. ISU has only beaten the Sooners twice in their last 49 meetings but they did win in Norman in 2017 and the last four games have been decided by 10 points or less.

Campbell says limiting mistakes and solid tackling are a must against teams like Oklahoma.

Oklahoma is coming off a loss at home in its Big-12 opener to Kansas State.

Campbell says the Sooners always have a great deal of talent and this season is no different.

(Radio Iowa) – Northern Iowa coach Mark Farley says with the change in their season the calendar has flipped. The Panthers will now play a spring season beginning in late February and UNI opens practice on Tuesday that Farley says resembles spring drills.

The Panthers will be allowed 15 practices through the end of October and Farley says one of his goals is to get all of the young players game ready.

They will also need to get the players ready for two seasons in one calendar year.

The spring season will feature eight games as well as the FCS playoffs.
