Iowa State hosts No. 18 Oklahoma

Sports

October 2nd, 2020 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – Iowa State hosts 18th ranked Oklahoma in prime time tomorrow night. The Sooners have their backs to the wall after losing at home to open Big-12 play. ISU will allow 15 thousand fans in Jack Trice Stadium but coach Matt Campbell says that won’t change their approach.

The Sooner defense is only giving up 60 yards on the ground per game and Campbell says their success begins with a veteran defensive line.

Oklahoma gave up 334 yards of passing in the loss to K-State but Campbell says the Sooner secondary has talent and speed.

Atlantic ready for another road test at Shenandoah tonight on KJAN

Sports

Trojan LogoThe Atlantic Trojans (4-1) football team continues their road warrior season tonight with a visit to the Shenandoah Mustangs (3-2). The Trojans are riding a four game winning streak; taking down Des Moines Christian last week 38-0. The Mustangs had a nice start to the season but stumbled last week in a 45-10 loss to rival Clarinda.

The Mustangs have been working to develop a balanced offense with senior quarterback Zayne Zwickel throwing for 775 yards, and two backs getting involved in the run and pass game. Morgan Cotten is a multi purpose option for Zwickel having carried the ball 91 times and catching 7 passes as well. Atlantic Head Coach Mike McDermott said the defense will be tested by the Mustangs.

Atlantic has been very opportunistic on defense with 15 takeaways on the year. The Trojans have also been able to develop some offensive balance of their own behind the passing of Garrett McLaren and the rushing duo of Korey Parrott and Bodie Johnson.

You can hear a full interview with Coach McDermott on Trojan Preview at 4:45 p.m. today on KJAN. Then we’ll have coverage of the game tonight. We’ll start the night with out pick ’em show Who’s Gonna Win? at 6:00 p.m. followed by The Dvorak Tire and Service Pregame Show at 6:30 p.m. with kickoff at 7:00 p.m. Jim Field will have the call on AM 1220, FM 101.1 and online at kjan.com. You can also catch live video on KJANTV!

Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

UNDATED (AP) — The San Diego Padres have forced a deciding third game of their NL Wild Card Series with an 11-9 comeback over St. Louis. The Cardinals led 6-2 in the sixth until Fernando Tatis Jr. and Wil Myers each homered twice and combined for nine RBIs. The Miami Marlins and Chicago Cubs were rained out at Wrigley Field, denying the Fish a chance to wrap up their series yesterday.

UNDATED (AP) — The Los Angeles Dodgers, Oakland Athletics and Atlanta Braves have closed out their Wild Card Series with victories. Clayton Kershaw tossed three-hit ball for eight innings of the Dodgers’ 3-0 shutout of Milwaukee, and Chad Pinder laced a tiebreaking, two-run single in the fifth inning to push the A’s past the Chicago White Sox, 6-4. Ian Anderson scattered two hits over six innings as the Braves blanked Cincinnati for the second straight day, 5-0.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — Brandon McManus drilled a go-ahead field goal with 3:08 remaining before Melvin Gordon ran 43 yards for a game-clinching touchdown in the Denver Broncos’ first win of the season, 37-28 over the Jets. Gordon ran for 107 yards and two scores, and Brett Rypien (RIH’-pehn) passed for 242 yards and two touchdowns in his first NFL start. Jets QB Sam Darnold had a team-high 84 yards on six carries, including a 46-yard TD run to open the scoring.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Sunday’s NFL game between the Tennessee Titans and Pittsburgh Steelers has been postponed until later in the season. The decision came after one additional Titans player and one personnel member tested positive for COVID-19. The Titans have now had confirmed cases in five players and seven members of the organization over the past five days in the NFL’s first outbreak.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs have struggled over the years to stop the run, regardless of who was directing their defense, but they showed in last week’s win over the Baltimore Ravens that they could rise to the challenge. They have another big one this weekend. The New England Patriots roll into Arrowhead Stadium behind new quarterback Cam Newton, himself a threat to run, and a backfield that just went roughshod over the Las Vegas Raiders last weekend. Sony Michel needed just nine carries to pile up 117 yards, Rex Burkhead reached the end zone three times and the Patriots totaled 250 yards rushing in the win.

Riverside finds new football opponent for Friday

Sports

October 1st, 2020 by admin

The Riverside Bulldogs have been able to line up a new football opponent for Friday night after their game with AHSTW was cancelled due to COVID-19 issues in the AHSTW district. The Bulldogs (4-1) will take on Class 2A Davis County (3-1) this week instead. The teams will meet in Leon for the game at Central Decatur High School and the game will be a 6:30 p.m. kickoff instead of 7:00 p.m.

The Bulldogs had a couple of other possibilities on the hook but nothing materialized until Davis County made contact with them and said they were willing to search for a neutral site.
