Chiefs-Patriots game off amid report Newton has COVID-19

Sports

October 3rd, 2020 by Ric Hanson

The NFL has postponed this week’s game between New England and the Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs after positive COVID-19 tests on both teams. ESPN reported on Saturday that Patriots quarterback Cam Newton was among those contracting the disease. The NFL says the game originally scheduled for Sunday afternoon will be played Monday or Tuesday.

The league said the move followed “positive COVID-19 tests on both teams.” The Patriots confirmed that a player has tested positive but did not reveal his name. The matchup between Pittsburgh and Tennessee has also been postponed, because of an outbreak on the Titans.

Here is the latest sports news from The Associated Press

UNDATED (AP) — Hall of Famer Bob Gibson, the dominating St. Louis Cardinals pitcher who won seven consecutive World Series starts and set a modern standard for excellence when he finished the 1968 season with an earned run average of 1.12, has died. The two-time Cy Young Award winner spent his entire 17-year career with the Cardinals and was named World Series MVP in their 1964 and ’67 championship seasons. He came up short in 1968, although he was named the National League’s MVP and won the Cy Young. Gibson died Friday in his hometown of Omaha, Nebraska, at the age of 84.

SAN DIEGO (AP) — The San Diego Padres are in the NL Division Series following a 4-0 shutout of the St. Louis Cardinals. San Diego went the bullpen route to close out the Wild Card Series as nine pitchers combined on a four-hitter in the Padres’ second straight win. Eric Hosmer broke a scoreless tie in the fifth with an RBI double off losing pitcher Jack Flaherty, who allowed six hits while striking out eight over six innings.

CHICAGO (AP) — The Miami Marlins won their first playoff series in 17 years by completing a two-game sweep of the Chicago Cubs, 2-0 in the NL Wild Card Series. The game was scoreless until Garrett Cooper homered off Yu Darvish in a two-run seventh. Brad Boxberger threw 1 1/3 innings to get the win in relief of hard-throwing rookie Sixto Sánchez, who limited the Cubs to four hits over five innings.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs have struggled over the years to stop the run, regardless of who was directing their defense, but they showed in last week’s win over the Baltimore Ravens that they could rise to the challenge. They have another big one this weekend. The New England Patriots roll into Arrowhead Stadium behind new quarterback Cam Newton, himself a threat to run, and a backfield that just went roughshod over the Las Vegas Raiders last weekend. Sony Michel needed just nine carries to pile up 117 yards, Rex Burkhead reached the end zone three times and the Patriots totaled 250 yards rushing in the win.

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) — Anthony Davis and LeBron James provided performances that were near duplicates of their Game 1 efforts in the NBA Finals, leading the Los Angeles Lakers to a 124-114 victory and a 2-0 series lead over the Miami Heat. James finished with 33 points, nine rebounds and nine assists after falling one assist short of a triple-double in the opener. Davis hit 14 of his first 15 shots on the way to 32 points, just two fewer than his Game 1 output.

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Craig Stammen and eight fellow relievers combined on a four-hitter in a brilliant, record-setting effort that sent the Padres over the St. Louis Cardinals 4-0 Friday night in the deciding Game 3 of their NL wild-card series. The Padres won a postseason series for the first time in 22 years and advanced to face the NL West rival Los Angeles Dodgers in a division series in Arlington, Texas, starting Tuesday. The Padres became the first team in baseball history to use eight or more pitchers in three straight postseason games.

Key turnover, 3 Johnson rushing TD’s lead Atlantic to road win over Shenandoah

Sports

October 2nd, 2020 by admin

The Atlantic Trojans got three second half rushing touchdowns from Bodie Johnson and pushed away to a 28-0 road win over Shenandoah on Friday night. The Trojans locked up the 2A-District 9 title with the win. It was a penalty filled contest and both teams couldn’t convert in the first half. Atlantic led at the break 7-0 on a 30-yard touchdown pass from Garrett McLaren to Colin Mullenix.

The Trojans broke the game open in the 3rd quarter. Colton Tasto sparked the turnaround by plucking a pitch from Shenandoah quarterback Zayne Zwickel out of the air and taking it inside the Mustangs 5 yard line. Bodie Johnson rammed it in to the endzone on the next play to put Atlantic up 14-0. Johnson added a 25-yarder later in the quarter and a 24-yard touchdown run early in the fourth to complete the scoring.

Johnson finished the game with 155 yards on 17 carries and the three scores. Colin Mullenix had just two grabs on the night but he gobbled up 76 yards on those catches and the early touchdown. The Trojans outgained the Mustangs 281-159 on offense. The downside was Atlantic getting penalized 14 times for 130 yards on the night. The Mustangs were called for 6 penalties for 75 yards. Each team turned the ball over twice.

The Trojans improve to 5-1 with the win and will finish off the regular season next week against Red Oak. It will be the Trojans first game at the newly renovated Trojan Bowl and we’ll have coverage on KJAN and KJANTV. Shenandoah falls to 3-3 and will host Greene County for their final regular season game.
