Pork tenderloin contest kicks off Friday

News

April 29th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

Entries for Iowa’s Best Breaded Pork Tenderloin will be accepted starting this Friday. Kelsey Sutter, spokeswoman for the Iowa Pork Producers Association, says it’s a hotly-contested title for a much-loved sandwich in the nation’s number-one pork producing state. “Really, breaded pork tenderloin sandwiches are just a staple, a Midwest favorite, and we’re simply on the search for the best one in the state,” Sutter says. “If you have one in your community that you think is fantastic and goes above and beyond, we’d love to know about it.”

Last year, a record 98 sandwiches were judged in the contest with nearly two-thousand nominations received. Last year’s winning tenderloin was from The Lucky Pig Pub and Grill in Ogden. Sutter says there will be a change in this year’s judging process so it’s assured the finalists come from all over the state. “We’re going to take the top five that are nominated in each of our eight districts,” she says. “Iowa Pork Producers has eight districts across the state, so we’re going to judge 40 sandwiches this year, the top five from each district.”

This is the 13th year for the contest. It’s open to any cafe, restaurant or tavern that serves hand-breaded or battered pork tenderloins on its core menu. The deadline for nominations is June 8th. The winner will be announced in October. For more details, visit: www.iowapork.org.

Hawkeye baseball team wins in 18 innings

Sports

April 29th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

The 15th ranked Iowa baseball team won another extra-innings game Tuesday, this time downing Sacramento State 4-3 in 18 innings. The Hawkeyes used extra innings to win one of their games in a three-game weekend sweep over Nebraska. Rick Heller’s team has put in a lot of work in a short amount of time after weather forced them to play a single game Saturday and a double-header with the Huskers Sunday.

“It’s tough to deal with in the early part of the weekend and obviously that’s always a stressful situation when you are the home team trying to make those tough decision on when to play,” Heller says. “And ending up having to play three nine-inning games in a 24-hour period is never easy, and for our guys to find way to beat Nebraska three times and not have a let down in any of those games says a lot about our team.” Heller says they were expecting to get back to normal with the single game Tuesday.

“Thinking you are going to have a nice single game on a beautiful night against Sacramento State turns into 18 innings and a lot of stressful innings during that one. But that one was extras special to be able to win that, if you play 18 innings, you certainly don’t want to lose it,” Heller says. Iowa had to come back a couple of times to win the game.

“If you keep playing the game, the game usually comes back to you in some way. When you just give up and let down is when you are beat, and this team just doesn’t give up,” Heller says. “It isn’t just recently that that’s been happening. We had some games early in the season where we hung around and came back and won, and I think that’s important in your first 10-15 games to win some games like that.” Iowa has had some injuries to key players, but also has had some come back and start to round into form, such as junior Jimmy Frankos.

“He’s just now three-quarters of the way into the season back into shape where he is turning into his old self. It was nice to have Jimmy swinging the bat well against Nebraska and he ended up being the co-conference player of the week. Getting some added punch from him has really helped,” Heller says. “Dan Potempa has had a good stretch — same thing with him –he got off to a slow start. He was an all-Big Ten D-H last season. Dan is really starting to swing the bat a lot better.” The extra-inning win moves the Hawkeyes to 31-11 overall. They return to conference action Friday afternoon with the start of a three-game series at Michigan.

Iowa State’s Naz Long To Have Second Hip Surgery

Sports

April 29th, 2015 by Jim Field

Iowa State guard Naz Long will have arthroscopic surgery performed on his right hip on Thursday, May 7. The surgery will replicate the previous procedure that was performed on April 1 on his left hip, alleviating chronic pain that worsened throughout his junior season. The surgery will again be performed by Dr. Bryan Warme at Mary Greeley Hospital in Ames and the recovery time is expected to be 3-5 months.

Iowa State men’s basketball athletic trainer Vic Miller says that Long’s recovery from his first surgery has went well.

“Naz is ahead of schedule on his recovery from his first surgery on his left hip and our hope is the second hip will respond in the same way,” Miller said. “Naz was so strong going into the first surgery, which always helps in a recovery.”

Long looks forward to getting the surgeries behind him and becoming an even bigger threat on the court.

“I’m looking forward to getting back to where I was and being able to do things from a mobility standpoint that I haven’t been able to do,” Long said. “I’ve been lifting for two weeks now and they tell me I am ahead of schedule. I’ve been blessed with a good body, one that has allowed me to heal faster. I’m excited to get this second surgery behind me.”

Long, a Mississauga, Ontario, native, started 33 of 34 games for the Cyclones in 2014-15. He averaged 10.1 points and hit a team-high 77 three-pointers. Long’s 2.3 three-pointers per game was second among Big 12 players.

(Updated 4/29) – Red Oak fertilizer spill contained & is being cleaner-up

Ag/Outdoor, News

April 29th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

Officials with the Montgomery County Emergency Management Agency said Wednesday afternoon, that the spill at Nachurs Alpine Nutrition plant has been contained, and was in the process of being cleaned up. Crews worked throughout the night pumping out the waterway between Nachurs and the east side of the levy.

Crews were expected to begin work on the area between the Nishnabotna River and the west side of levy this (Wednesday) afternoon, to remove any standing water. Over the next several days and possibly the next couple of weeks, crews will be in the area along the creek to remove any contaminated soil.

The DNR is continuing to investigate, but at this time officials say it appears that the water was pumped out of a containment pool into the waterway before it was realized that the water color had changed. There was no tank or line rupture, and there is no immediate harm or life safety risk to the public nor has there been.

As far as the environmental hazard to any fish, it appears to be minimal as the majority of the substance stayed within the creek however that will continue to be monitored by the Iowa DNR. The Montgomery County EMA says while work is being completed, residents of Red Oak will see a presence of heavy equipment in the area. You’re asked to avoid the area while those crews are operating.

As previously mentioned, there is no life safety risk to the public nor has there been. The DNR does urge that small children or pets stay out of the creek between the Nishnabotna River and Nachurs.
