Iowa football set for first scrimmage; Campbell steps in at Middle Linebacker for Iowa

Sports

October 9th, 2020 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa)  – The clock is ticking for the Iowa Hawkeyes who open a revived Big Ten football season in two weeks at Purdue. The Hawkeyes have been in pads for a little more than a week and will conduct their first scrimmage this weekend.

That’s Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz. For a program that banks on strong defense and limiting turnovers reduced practice time and reduced contact is a concern.

Ferentz says every team is dealing with a lot of unknowns this season.

………………..

Jack Campbell steps in at MLB for Iowa

(Radio Iowa) – Iowa linebacker Jack Campbell says the experience he gained a year ago will be a plus for this season. The Cedar Falls native is expected to take over at middle linebacker after playing in 11 games as a true freshman.

Campbell says he learned a great deal while playing behind Kristian Welch last season.

Campbell says communication is key at middle linebacker.

The Hawkeyes open October 24 at Purdue.

Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

UNDATED (AP) — Iowa State hosts Texas Tech on Saturday looking for its first 3-0 start in conference play since 2002. The Cyclones are coming off a big win over Oklahoma and is guarding against a letdown against an opponent they’ve beaten four straight years. Iowa State coach Matt Campbell says his team understands it will be judged at the end of the season and not on a game-by-game basis. Campbell said Texas Tech is improving. All three of the Red Raiders’ games have been close. They lost their first two Big 12 games after squandering fourth-quarter leads.

CHICAGO (AP) — Cairo Santos kicked a 38-yard field with 1:17 left as the Chicago Bears beat Tom Brady for the first time in six tries, 20-19 over Tampa Bay. Nick Foles completed 30 of 42 passes for 243 yards and a touchdown in his second start since replacing Mitchell Trubisky. Brady threw for 253 yards and one touchdown, but the Buccaneers came up short after winning three in a row.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs are 4-0 for the fourth consecutive year, and thanks largely to that suddenly dominant defense, they have a chance to take a stranglehold five games into the season on the AFC West when they face Las Vegas at Arrowhead Stadium on Sunday for the first of their two regular-season meetings. The Raiders are off to a 2-2 start behind an offense that put up 34 points each of their first two games, but they have struggled defensively and come to Kansas City having lost consecutive games to the Patriots and Bills.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Kansas coach Les Miles has tested positive for COVID-19 and is quarantining in his home, where he plans to fulfill his head coaching responsibilities remotely as the Jayhawks spend a week off before visiting West Virginia. Miles announced his positive test in a statement Thursday. The school did not say whether any other players or staff have tested positive, though the Jayhawks have had clusters of positive tests since the beginning of the season.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Clint Bowyer will retire at the end of the NASCAR season and join the Fox Sports booth as an analyst. Bowyer is in his 15th full season and heads into Sunday’s race at Charlotte Motor Speedway facing elimination from the playoffs. In a two-page letter posted to Twitter on Thursday night, Bowyer said he’s pursuing a new opportunity and will move into a full-time television job. Bowyer is a popular veteran who has won races for Ford, Chevrolet and Toyota during his career with Richard Childress Racing, Michael Waltrip Racing and now Stewart-Haas Racing.
