Here is the latest sports news from The Associated Press

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Derek Carr threw for 347 yards and three touchdowns, outplaying Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes along the way, and the Las Vegas Raiders nearly shut out the potent Kansas City offense in the second half to rally for a 40-32 victory that ended the Chiefs’ franchise-record 13-game winning streak. The Chiefs trailed 40-24 before a late TD pass, but Josh Jacobs ran for a first down and Carr sneaked for another on fourth-and-1 to clinch the Raiders’ first win at Arrowhead Stadium since October 2012. The Chiefs had won 28 of their last 30 games against the AFC West.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Patrick Mahomes has quickly earned a reputation for pulling off the seemingly impossible, whether it’s a no-look pass or a 70-yard heave or merely leading the Kansas City Chiefs to victory when all hope seems lost. But it was the Chiefs’ inability to execute the simple stuff that hurt them against the Las Vegas Raiders. They blew coverages, were penalized at the most inopportune times and were unable to get the kind of crazy plays late in the games that have bailed them out in the past.

SEATTLE (AP) — Russell Wilson capped a 94-yard drive with a 6-yard touchdown pass to DK Metcalf on fourth-and-goal with 15 seconds left to give the Seattle Seahawks a 27-26 triumph over the Minnesota Vikings. Wilson finished 20 of 32 for 217 yards and three touchdowns as the Seahawks improved to 5-0 for the first time in franchise history. Alexander Mattison rushed for a career-high 112 yards but was stopped on fourth-and-1 at the Seattle 6 with 1:57 left, setting the stage for yet another Wilson comeback.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott sustained a dislocation and compound fracture of his right ankle during a 37-34 win over the New York Giants. Prescott has never missed a start in four-plus seasons with the Cowboys and was on track to have a career year until he suffered the injury late in the third quarter. Backup Andy Dalton led a drive that ended with Greg Zuerlein’s 34-yard field goal as time expired.

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) — The Los Angeles Lakers have won their 17th NBA championship with a 106-93 victory over the Miami Heat in Game 6. LeBron James delivered 28 points, 14 rebounds and 10 assists to secure his fourth career NBA title and the Lakers’ first in a decade. L.A. took command by outscoring the Heat, 36-16 in the second quarter to carry a 28-point lead into intermission.

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Blake Snell worked the first five innings before four relievers completed a combined nine-hitter in the Tampa Bay Rays’ 2-1 win over Houston in Game 1 of the AL Championship Series. Randy Arozarena (ah-rah-zah-RAY’-nah) tied it with a fourth-inning homer and Mike Zunino singled home the lead run in the fifth. Diego Castillo closed out the victory after getting Yuli Gurriel (gur-ee-EHL’) to ground into a double play to end the eighth inning.

Atlantic celebrates opening of renovated Trojan Bowl

News, Sports

October 10th, 2020 by admin

The Atlantic School District, project contributors, and the facilities steering committee celebrated the re-opening of the Trojan Bowl on Friday Night. An on field dedication ceremony and ribbon cutting was held prior to the Homecoming football game against Red Oak.

Renovations at the Trojan Bowl were part of a $9.5 million bond issue that voters passed in April of 2019. The bond issue included renovation at the Trojan Bowl, a complete overall of the baseball and softball fields, a new track and synthetic field at the high school, new tennis courts at the high school, and a new entry drive and parking lot renovation at Washington Elementary.

The specific renovations at the Trojan Bowl included new concessions and restrooms, ticket booths, storage, four-lane track, visitor parking, new bleachers that are ADA compliant, site paving, lighting, sound, and a new scoreboard and play clocks. It was decided after the passage of the bond that a synthetic turf would also be laid at the Trojan Bowl with a fundraising effort to try to cover that extra cost.

A number of businesses and community members donated to the field turf, and Jim Tyler and the Tyler family led that charge with a $100,000 matching grant donated from Atlantic Bottling Company. Tyler cut the ceremonial ribbon to mark the occasion. Rolling Hills Bank and Trust was another major donor recognized for their $50,000 contribution.
