KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Kendrys Morales homered on his 32nd birthday and the Kansas City Royals rallied to beat the Boston Red Sox 7-4 Saturday night. Morales hit a two-run, tie-breaking shot in a five-run fifth off Rick Porcello. It was his third career homer on a birthday.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Aaron Brooks is joining the Kansas City Royals pitching staff and Yohan Pino is going back to the minors. Pino is optioned to Triple-A Omaha after going 5 1-3 innings Friday in a loss to Boston in his first big league start this season. Brooks, a 25-year-old right-hander, is making his third stint with the Royals.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Washington Nationals pitcher Max Scherzer has tossed the second no-hitter in the majors this season to lead a 6-0 win over Pittsburgh. Scherzer was one strike from a perfect game until he hit Jose Tabata on the elbow with a pitch. The second shutout in Nationals history comes nine months after Jordan Zimmermann threw the first.

JOLIET, Ill. (AP) — The start of the NASCAR Xfinity Series Allicat 300 was postponed by a thunderstorm Saturday night at Chicagoland Speedway. The race was rescheduled for 11 a.m. CDT today (Sunday). A storm hit the track about 50 minutes before the green flag. Austin Dillon is on the pole in a Chevrolet with a qualifying speed of 176.569 mph. He’s joined on the front row by Ross Kenseth, the 22-year-old son of the former Sprint Cup champion making his debut in a NASCAR-sanctioned race.

UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. (AP) — Masters champion Jordan Spieth is among four players who share the lead through three rounds of the U.S. Open at Chambers Bay. Spieth shot a 1-over 71 that leaves him 4-undeer for the tournament, tied with Jason Day, Dustin Johnson and Branden Grace. Day shot the best round of the day among the leaders, a 2-under 68.

Ohio Gov. Kasich to stop in Dsm & Council Bluffs this week

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Ohio Gov. John Kasich is hitting the road again later this week. The Ohio governor will be making his first trip to Iowa since he began exploring whether to enter the race for the Republican presidential nomination. Kasich has yet to officially announce his decision on the 2016 presidential race.

He recently was in South Carolina, Michigan and New Hampshire. Kasich’s trip to Iowa on Wednesday will have him making several stops in Des Moines and Council Bluffs.

2 men beaten after 1 is robbed & vehicle stolen, in C. Bluffs

Two men were being treated for non-life threatening injuries after they were beaten in Council Bluffs. The men, who are brothers, were identified as 41-year old Johnny and 38-year old Craig Anfinson, both of Council Bluffs. Authorities say officers initially responded at around 9:50-p.m. Saturday to reports of shots fired and someone possibly run over, at 2122 6th Avenue.

When they arrived they found Johnny Anfinson had been robbed of cash and a vehicle. When Anfinson tried to retrieve his vehicle with his brother, they were both struck with blunt objects. The suspects fled the area and had not been located as of last report.

The incident is being investigated as a robbery by the Council Bluffs P-D’s Criminal Investigation Division.

SUV hits the rear of a semi in Fremont County – drive injured

The driver of an SUV was taken to the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Saturday, after the vehicle rear-ended a semi, in Fremont County. The accident happened at around 2:45-p.m.  According to the Iowa State Patrol, the semi, driven by 55-year old Jerry Harmon, of Orlando, FL., was traveling east in the outside lane of Highway 2, and slowing for the intersection at 208th Street, when the 2015 Freightliner he was in, was hit from behind by a 1997 Ford Explorer.

Following the crash, 49-year old Ishag Mohamed, of Lincoln, NE, was transported to the hospital by Mercy LifeFlight helicopter. Deputies with the Fremont County Sheriff’s Office, as well as crews from Hamburg and Sidney Fire and Rescue, assisted at the scene.

Central IA teen hurt while tubing at Lake Panorama

A West Des Moines teenager was air lifted to Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines after suffering a head injury while tubing on Lake Panorama in Guthrie County on Saturday afternoon. The Iowa DNR says 15-year old Angela Cary was on a three-person tube being towed by a boat when the tube hit a wave throwing all three on-board into the water at about 2:30-p.m. on Saturday.

Also on the tube was Angela’s sister, 19-year old Kayla Cary, of West Des Moines, and 16-year old Rachael Anfinson, of Urbandale. All three of the girls were wearing life jackets at the time of the incident. Anfinson also suffered a head injury and received stitches at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines where she was taken by private car following the incident. She was treated and released.

It is believed that Angela Cary and Anfinson bumped heads when the tube was flipped over after hitting the wave. The boat was operated by 54-year old David Furbush, of Clive.

Iowa DCI Investigating rural Marion County Homicide

The Marion County Sheriff’s Office and Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation are investigating a homicide that was discovered Friday. Authorities said late Saturday evening, that deputies and emergency crews responded at around 11:12-a.m. Friday to a report of an unresponsive female at 132 Perry Street, in rural Lacona. Upon arrival Melcher-Dallas Rescue personnel and deputies discovered the body of a deceased female who lives in the home. The victim was identified as 68-year old Shirley Carter.

An autopsy conducted by the State Medical Examiner’s Office revealed the cause of death was a gunshot wound and that it was a homicide. The final autopsy results won’t be known for several weeks.

Authorities have not named a possible suspect. Anyone with information about the crime should contact the Marion County Sheriff’s Office at 641-828-2220.

 

Hiawatha woman killed by lightning strike Sat., at Pleasant Creek

The Iowa DNR says a Hiawatha woman died after being struck by lightning early Saturday evening at Pleasant Creek State Recreation Area near Palo, in Linn County. 42-year old Rebecca McCarty was camping with friends and family when she was struck by lightning while walking between camping spots shortly after 5:30 p.m. on Saturday. McCarty was transported by ambulance to St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids where she was pronounced dead.

Nevada woman injured after fall from cliff at Ledges State Park

A Nevada woman was injured Saturday after an approximately 40-foot fall from a cliff along the Lost Lake Trail located on the southwest side of Ledges State Park in Boone County. Officials with the Iowa DNR identified the woman as 19-year old Shannon Novak. She was taken by ambulance to Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines after suffering injuries to her back and ankle.

Novack was with two friends when she lost her footing and fell from a sandstone outcropping over the Des Moines River known as Solstice Rock shortly after 1:30 p.m. She was conscious and talking with bystanders when rescuers reached the scene.
Because of the ruggedness of the trail, Novack was instead taken downstream to the waiting ambulance by a boat from the Boone County Search and Rescue.

Virginia beats Florida 5-4, faces Vandy in CWS finals again

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Kenny Towns drove in three runs, including the winner in the seventh, and Josh Sborz pitched four innings of shutout relief as Virginia defeated Florida 5-4 on Saturday night to set up a College World Series finals rematch against Vanderbilt.

Virginia (42-23), which lost 10-5 to Florida on Friday, took two of three CWS games against the Gators (52-18) and now has won eight of its nine NCAA Tournament games. The Cavaliers open the best-of-three finals against a Vanderbilt team that beat them in three games for the championship last year.

It will be the first CWS finals rematch since Oregon State beat North Carolina in 2006-07. Sborz (6-2) ran his shutout innings streak to 23 since May 15, getting Richie Martin to ground out after Harrison Bader reached on a two-out single in the ninth. Danny Lewis (6-2) took the loss.
