Iowa Football Gameday Traffic, Parking Information

Sports

August 29th, 2023 by Asa Lucas

IOWA CITY, Iowa — For fans traveling to and from Kinnick Stadium this fall for football games, please be advised of the following road and traffic information.

With the season opener on Sept. 2 having an early 11 a.m. start time, coupled with parking changes and various road construction projects around campus, fans are encouraged to allow additional time in their commute to the game.

I-80/I-380 INTERCHANGE

All ramps are open at the I-80/I-380 interchange. The multi-year project is nearing completion and fans are able to access all ramps in all directions beginning Sept. 1, in time for the season opener.

TRAFFIC/CONSTRUCTION: 1st AVENUE (CORALVILLE)

Fans traveling to or from I-80 should avoid 1st Avenue (Coralville). The ongoing major construction at I-80 exit 242 will persist all season long. During this time, 1st Avenue will remain one lane in each direction over I-80. This has the potential to create significant delays both pregame and postgame. Signage will be placed along I-80 and on Highway 6 to discourage fans from using 1st Avenue.

Fans who need to access I-80 after football games from Kinnick Stadium surrounding parking lots are encouraged to continue straight through the Hawkins Drive/Hwy 6 intersection onto Rocky Shore Drive/Park Road, which ultimately connects to Dubuque Street (turn left to travel north approximately one mile to I-80). Alternatively, fans may access I-80 from Highway 6 via Coral Ridge Avenue.

TRAFFIC/CONSTRUCTION: SOUTH RIVERSIDE DRIVE/MYRTLE AVENUE (IOWA CITY)

Traffic is expected to be reduced to two lanes (one lane in either direction) on South Riverside Drive just south of Myrtle Avenue for the season opener on Sept. 2. Fans are encouraged to use an alternate route to avoid delays. It is hopeful all four lanes on South Riverside Drive will be open for Iowa’s home game against Western Michigan on Sept. 16.

PARKING CHANGES

  • Lot 52/Hawkeye Ramp: Construction of the Hawkeye Ramp began this past summer with anticipated completion in 2025. For football games in 2023, Lot 52 (previously known as Lot 43N) will continue to provide limited parking for RVs (reserved) and ADA on gameday.
  • Lot 40: Passenger vehicles, which previously parked in Lot 52, have been relocated to Lot 40. Over 350 passenger vehicles will be placed in this lot.
  • Lot 73 (University Club Lot): Lot 73 has been expanded to accommodate RVs (reserved), many of which previously parked in Lot 40. Approximately 60 RVs will be placed in this lot.
  • Lot 65 (Finkbine Commuter Lot): Lot 65 will only be available for passenger vehicles on football gameday.
  • Lot 48 (Myrtle Lot): Myrtle lot has been expanded to accommodate fans displaced due to construction in Lot 14. The Myrtle Lot is no longer a public lot, and a permit will be required for entry on gameday.

PUBLIC PARKING

  • There are a limited number of pre-paid permits that remain available in Lot 65 (Finkbine Commuter).
  • Day of game parking for $30 is available at the Finkbine Golf Course, Lower Finkbine and Softball lots.
  • Day of game ADA parking for $30 will be available in Ramp 4. Vehicles must display a state issued ADA placard or license plate.
  • Free parking is available at Lot 55 (Hancher Auditorium Lot) and Lot 85 (Hawkeye Commuter Lot). Parking is also available in Lot 11 (CRWC) at the University’s standard hourly rate.

Fans are encouraged to visit hawkeyesports.com/footballgameday for additional information on parking and traffic.

Northern Iowa coach Mark Farley previews Iowa State

Sports

August 29th, 2023 by Jim Field

Northern Iowa coach Mark Farley says the Panthers will practice outside this week to get ready for Saturday’s opener at Iowa State. Game time temperatures are expected to reach the mid-90s in Jack Trice Stadium The Panthers worked in the UNI-Dome during last week’s heat wave.

Farley says the opening game always answers a lot of questions. UNI has an experienced team that enters the season ranked 20th in the FCS poll.

Farley says they are not sure who the Cyclones will play at quarterback and tailback with Hunter Dekkers and Jirehl Brock being sidelined by a gambling investigation.

Farley says the biggest adjustment may come from several new assistants on the staff.

Former Panther assistant Ryan Clanton is entering his first season as the offensive line coach at ISU.

The Cyclones have won the last three in the series but the last two have been decided by a total of nine points, including Iowa State’s triple overtime victory in 2019.

The Cyclones start another difficult nonconference slate for UNI.

Drake players ready for bonus season

Sports

August 29th, 2023 by Jim Field

Several Drake football players are using their COVID year to extend their playing career. Utah native and defensive back Joey Lukrich (loo-kritch) says playing college football will have an impact when he enters the working world.

Lukrich already has his degree and is in graduate school as he finishes his playing career.

Lukrich has a brother who had to give up college football because of an injury so for him the decision to return was an easy one.

Offensive lineman Brendan Burton already has his degree but the Waterloo native made the decision to return after having last season cut short by an injury.

Burton says for him it was an easy decision to return.

The Bulldogs open at North Dakota on September second.

Five-day event opens today aiming to package four-million meals for the hungry

News

August 29th, 2023 by Jim Field

This (Tuesday) morning marks the start of the 16th annual effort to package millions of meals to help feed the hungry in Iowa, across the U-S, and in countries around the globe. Meals from the Heartland launches the massive mission with today’s corporate contest, where Hy-Vee spokeswoman Nola Aigner (EYE-gner) Davis says dozens of volunteers will be pitching in to assemble the meals in plastic bags, which are then packed into cardboard boxes.

That event, the One Step Challenge, is being held at the MidAmerican Energy RecPlex in West Des Moines. The larger “Hunger Fight” event runs tomorrow (Wednesday) through Saturday as many thousands of volunteers will be packaging meals at Hy-Vee Hall in downtown Des Moines. The goal is to produce and package four-million meals by the end of the day on Saturday.

There are two basic meals that will be assembled, a Hearty Pack, with rice, soy protein, vitamins, minerals and dried vegetables; and a Taco Mac, which contains enriched pasta, soy flour, and vitamin- and mineral-fortified cheese mix.

Individual and group registrations are being welcomed for shifts tomorrow through Saturday. Hairnets and gloves will be provided. Since 2008, Meals from the Heartland has provided more than 183-million meals to the hungry in Iowa, across the U.S., and around the world.

Nunn says his bid for a second term will be ‘hotly contested’

News

August 29th, 2023 by Jim Field

Republican Congressman Zach Nunn says his race for a second term in the U-S House will get national attention.

The latest data shows Democrats have a 77-hundred voter registration edge over Republicans in the third congressional district. Last November, Nunn won Iowa’s third district seat in the U-S House by finishing just 21-hundred votes ahead of Democratic incumbent Cindy Axne. This summer, national Democrats began running online ads accusing Nunn of being part of the G-O-P’s anti-abortion crusade.

Nunn notes there will be no statewide races on Iowa’s 2024 General Election ballot.

Nunn says his congressional race, along with the U-S House races in Iowa’s other three congressional districts, will be the lead races in Iowa next year. No Democrat has announced they plan to run against Nunn in 2024. In Iowa’s first district, Republican Congresswoman Mariannette Miller-Meeks will likely face a rematch with Democrat Christina Bohannan of Iowa City. Bohannan announced her 2024 congressional campaign earlier this month. Two Democrats say they’re running in Iowa’s fourth congressional district. One of the Democrats is Ryan Melton of Nevada, who ran against Republican Congressman Randy Feenstra last year, and the other is Ames doctor Jay Brown.
