CHICAGO (AP) – The Chicago Cubs have selected left-hander Clayton Richard’s contract from Triple-A Iowa in time for Saturday’s start against the Miami Marlins and placed catcher David Ross on the seven-day concussion disabled list.
They also selected catcher Taylor Teagarden’s contract from Iowa and optioned right-hander Donn Roach to Triple-A on Saturday. Infielder Tommy La Stella was transferred to the 60-day disabled list from the 15-day DL, and right-hander Gonzalez Germen was designated for assignment.
Richard, acquired Friday from Pittsburgh for cash, was making his first major league appearance since 2013 with San Diego. He had left shoulder surgery in June that season. The move involving the 38-year-old Ross is retroactive to Thursday. He is batting .189 with four RBIs in 38 games.
ST. LOUIS (AP) – Jhonny Peralta broke an eighth-inning tie with a sacrifice fly, and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the San Diego Padres 2-1 Saturday to stop their longest losing streak of the season at four games. Carlos Martinez threw 6 2-3 solid innings, and Seth Maness (3-0) got the win. Trevor Rosenthal closed for his 24th save in 25 opportunities, getting Matt Kemp to ground out with a runner on to end it.
Rosenthal had a 23-game scoreless string halted on Friday. San Diego won the first two games of the series, including a 2-1 victory Friday. All four losses during St. Louis’ skid came at home.
SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) —
Police in Sioux City are urging people not to use a cellphone case that looks like a gun, saying the device could be confused for the real thing. Police Chief Doug Young tells the Sioux City Journal that the case could put people who carry it in danger.
The case is designed to hold a smartphone in what would be the barrel of a handgun. It includes a pistol handle and trigger guard. Woodbury County Sheriff Dave Drew says the phone case looks like a real gun if it’s tucked into a waistband or pocket to hide the phone and show only the handle.
Police in Council Bluffs are investigating an assault that left a man in critical condition, Friday night.
Sgt. Mark Stuart with the Council Bluffs P-D said Saturday, officers responded to the vicinity of 10th and West Broadway Streets at around 10:30-p.m. to a report of an unconscious man lying in the middle of the street under the Broadway viaduct.
The male subject suffered severe injuries and was transported to the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha. The victim’s name is not being released at this time pending notification of next of kin.
The incident remains under investigation by the Criminal Investigation Division of the Council Bluffs Police Department. Anyone having information is encouraged to contact the Police Department at (712) 328-4728 or Crime Stoppers at (712) 328-7867.

Grilled Peaches
Preparation:
In a small bowl, combine brown sugar and cinnamon. Cut peaches along the seam all the way around and twist halves off the pit. Brush cut sides with oil. Cook, cut side down, on a medium grill until fruit has grill marks, 3 to 4 minutes. Brush uncut sides with oil, turn over. Sprinkle cut sides with cinnamon sugar. Cover grill and cook until sugar is melted and fruit is tender, 5 to 10 minutes depending on size of peach and how tender you would like it. Yummy served with vanilla ice cream.
Banana Boats
Heat gas or charcoal grill to medium, or heat oven to 350°F. Cut 6 (12-inch) sheets of heavy-duty foil. With sharp knife, make deep lengthwise cut along inside curve of each banana, being careful not to cut all the way through. Open slit to form pocket. Crimp and shape 1 sheet of foil around each banana, forming boats. Holding each banana in hand, fill pocket with 1 tablespoon chocolate chips, 1 tablespoon marshmallows and a few chopped pecans. Seal top of foil, leaving 2 to 3 inches headspace. Place on grill over medium heat. Cover grill; cook 8 to 10 minutes or until marshmallows soften. Or bake 15 to 20 minutes in oven until marshmallows soften. (Can also place in campfire coals to cook.)
