(Newton, Iowa) – One person died and another was injured following a head-on collision Saturday afternoon in Jasper County. The Iowa State Patrol says a 2024 International truck was traveling south on County Highway T-22 at around 4:27-p.m., when the right side tires of the vehicle went off the edge of the road.. The driver over-corrected, causing the truck to veer to the left and cross the center line of the road into the northbound lane. The driver of a 2021 Chevy pickup truck traveling in that lane took evasive action, but the vehicles collided head-on.
Both vehicles entered a ditch following the crash. A passenger in the pickup, 51-year-old Jill Christine Vandyke, of Lynville, died at the scene. The driver, 56-year-old Gerry Lee Vandyke, also from Lynville, was injured, and transported to a hospital in Des Moines. Both victims were wearing their seat belts.
The driver of the International truck, 39-year-old Leticia Penate De Rodriguez, of Des Moines, was not injured in the crash. The Patrol was assisted at the scene by multiple agencies.
