OWA CITY, Iowa – University of Iowa track and field posted five personal bests on Saturday, competing in the Musco Twilight at Francis X. Cretzmeyer Track. Four of those marks came from the throws group, where the Hawkeyes earned a pair of victories in the men’s and women’s discus.

The Hawkeyes recognized 35 graduating team members for Senior Day.

Senior Jordan Johnson opened the day with a 58.00-meter (190’ 3”) season best to win the men’s discus. Sophomore Walker Whalen recorded a career-best 54.80 meters (165’ 4”) to take seventh in the event.

On the women’s side, senior Kat Moody was the discus champion throwing 55.04 meters (180’ 7“). The Hawkeyes dominated the event, with freshman Sydnie Smith hitting a lifetime best 49.80 meters (163’ 4”) to take runner-up and senior Jamie Kofron placing fourth at 46.13 meters (151’ 4”). Smith’s mark ranks eighth in program history at Iowa.

Iowa also picked up a pair of victories in the high jump events, where senior Zack Pluff was the men’s champion at 2.01 meters (6’ 7”) and junior Jade Hunter was first in the women’s event at 1.70 meters (5’ 7”). Hunter’s mark was a new personal record.

Freshman Cameron Kalaway earned a new personal best in the Larry Wieczorek women’s 1,500 meters, racing 4:46.22 to lead Iowa and place fourth overall.

In the men’s shot put, senior Quintin Lyons placed third with a new lifetime best of 17.86 meters (58’ 7.25”). Moody finished second in the women’s shot, throwing 16.31, and sophomore Wisdom Williams took third with a 15.61 meter toss.

“The weather didn’t help us much today. It was a great opportunity for some of our underclassmen to compete at home. The discus went very well today, especially with Jordan Johnson getting back toward the 60-meter mark. Sydnie (Smith) is someone we thought about redshirting, but we decided to pull the redshirt and now she’s taken advantage of the opportunity. Jade Hunter had a great day in the high jump to hit the 1.70 (meter) mark. It’s rewarding for her because she has been working so hard and to see that pay off with success is exciting. We have to stay healthy and keep building on this momentum at Drake and in Arizona next weekend.”
