The Atlantic Girls basketball team carved out a 49-39 win at home on Friday night against the Denison-Schleswig Monarchs. The Trojans had a 9-2 first quarter lead melt away early in the second quarter but they responded thanks to 10 big points in the first half from Paytn Harter. Atlantic went into the locker room with 10+ turnovers and looked lethargic on the court. In the second half Atlantic clamped down defensively on the Monarchs and started the fourth quarter on a 10-2 run to grab the win. Trojan head coach Dan Vargason was proud with the overall effort from Atlantic in the second half.

It was a sturdy team effort for Atlantic with three players finishing in double figures. Paytn Harter led the Trojans again with 21 points. Makenna Schroeder added 11 points and Zoey Kirchhoff chipped in 11.

Atlantic improves to 8-12 on the season. Next up is a trip to Harlan on Tuesday and it’s a game where Vargason expects his team to be more aggressive.

Denison-Schleswig was led by 20 points from Kiana Schultz. The Monarchs drop to 8-9 and will face Carroll on Saturday afternoon.
