Hawkeyes Notch 1st Win; Down FGCU, 5-2

FORT MYERS, Fla. – After getting rained out during Friday’s season opener, the University of Iowa women’s tennis team closed out the weekend with a 5-2 victory over Florida Gulf Coast on Saturday at the FGCU Tennis Complex.

The Hawkeyes opened the dual by winning the doubles point with victories at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. Sophomore Daianne Hayashida and junior Marisa Schmidt captured the dual’s first win on court two, downing Jordana Ossa and Madeleine Joffe, 6-2.

Sophomore Pia Kranholdt and junior Barbora Pokorna secured the doubles point with their win over Paloma Goldsmith and Ida Ferding on court three, 6-3. Sophomore Nikita Vishwase and senior Vipasha Mehra led their match over Isabella Colmenares and Fanny Norin, 5-4, at the No. 1 line, but the match went unfinished after the point was secured.

The Hawkeyes rolled in singles, posting victories at one, two, four and six.

Kranholdt notched Iowa’s second point at No. 6 singles with a straight set win over Joffe, 6-2, 6-2. Schmidt followed on court two, downing Ossa in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2, and Hayashida made it 4-0 with her 6-2, 6-3 win over Norin at the No. 1 spot. Mehra continued the straight set wins, downing Colmenares on court four, 7-6, 6-3.

FGCU got on the board with wins at No. 5 and No. 3. Pokorna dropped a 7-6, 6-4 decision to Goldsmith at No. 5 singles and Vishwase fell, 6-2, 5-7, 0-1, at No. 3.

UP NEXT 

Iowa will head to South Bend next weekend to compete at Notre Dame. The match will start at 10 a.m. (CT) on Saturday.
