Baylor’s Ja’Kobe Walter (player) and Kansas’ Hunter Dickinson (newcomer) collected the first set of 2023-24 Big 12 men’s basketball honors after leading their teams to season-opening wins.

In his first collegiate game, Walter poured in 28 points to lead Baylor to an 88-82 come-from-behind win over Auburn. He finished the week averaging 16.3 points, 4.7 rebounds and 1.0 steals as the Bears went 3-0 to start the season for a fourth straight year. With his performance against the Tigers, Walter set a school record for the most points by a freshman in their debut, while being one of just four freshmen in Big 12 history to score at least 28 in their opener, and the only player to do it against a power conference opponent. Of the 14 20-point performances in the Conference last week, Walter’s was the highest-scoring and the only one to come against a power conference opponent. The guard closed the week with 14 points and a career-high eight rebounds against Gardner-Webb.

Dickinson averaged 19.5 points and 8.0 rebounds in Kansas’ two wins last week. In 24 minutes of play in his KU debut, Dickinson was almost perfect going 8-9 from the field, 3-3 from the 3-point line and hitting both free throw attempts for 21 points in the win versus North Carolina Central. He added eight rebounds, five assists, two blocked shots and one steal. In just 21 minutes versus Manhattan College, Dickinson posted 18 points, eight rebounds and two assists. Dickinson has scored in double figures 50 times in his career, including in both of his games at Kansas. Against Manhattan, the general studies major secured his 800th career rebound.
