Leading the Cyclones

Iowa State scored two goals last Sunday against UCSB, marking the second time this season ISU has scored 2+ goals.

Five different Cyclones (Salomé Prat, Abigail Miller, Mira Emma, Kristin Boos and Lauren Hernandez) have goals to their names on the season. Emma leads the team in shots with 12 and she, along with Prat and Miller, has two goals on the year.

Both Emma and Prat have seven shots on goal to lead the team. Emma leads the team in points with two goals and an assist. Four other Cyclones are tied with Emma for most assists on the team with one.

Goalkeeper Avery Gillahan is the lone Cyclone to have played all 540 possible minutes this season, with Chloe Broughton having played just two minutes less at 538.

Scouting Portland State

After starting the season 0-3, Portland State picked up its first win of the season in its last outing on August 27.

Five different Vikings have found the back of the net on the season, with Abi Hoffman leading the way with two goals scored. Just two Portland State players have assists while, Hoffman (13) and teammate Elle Frazier (10) lead the team in shots.

Portland State has used two different keepers so far this season, with Natalie Cunningham starting in three of the four competitions. Cunningham has 13 saves and a clean sheet to her name on the year.

From the Notebook

  • The Cyclones have lost just one match under Coach Fannon when scoring at least two goals. Two seems to be the magic number for the offense.
  • Arkansas State transfer Abigail Miller has already surpassed her 2022 point total in Jonesboro, tallying four points through four games of action (she had three points with ASU in 2022).
  • Mira Emma, Salomé Prat and Abigail Miller each have multiple goals on the season. That matches the total number of players who had multiple goals in 2022 for the Cyclones.
  • Iowa State leads the Big 12 in shot accuracy, placing 62.7% of its attempts on goal. That’s good enough for the 10th-highest ranking in the country.
  • Three Big 12 programs are ranked in the Coaches Poll this week, as BYU is No. 1 in the country, Texas is 17th and TCU returned to the poll, checking in at 25.
  • Mira Emma recorded her 11th career assist in the season-opener, pushing her into the ISU top 10 all-time. Emma also moved into a tie for most goals in a Cyclone uniform, scoring her 13th against UCSB.
  • After program legend Jordan Silkowitz was drafted into the NWSL, a new face took the net for the Cyclones this past week, as Avery Gillahan handled goalkeeping responsibilities.
    • Gillahan earned Big 12 Freshman of the Week honors on August 23rd for her performances during the first week of the season.

Series History

Iowa State and Portland State will be meeting for the first time ever on Thursday and it will be ISU’s first trip to play soccer in the state of Oregon. The only other Oregon-based D1 program ISU has played is Portland, who the Cyclones met in Lincoln, Neb., in 2005.
