Big plays lift CAM over Baxter

The CAM Cougars hit on enough big plays to outlast the Baxter Bolts 58-38 on Friday night in the first round of the 8-Player playoffs. The Cougars hit on long touchdown passes at the end of the first half and beginning of the second half to swing the game in their favor.

Baxter scored on a 30-yard touchdown pass from Cody Damman to Cael Shepley with just 24 seconds left in the first half to take a 30-18 lead. It seemed like a deflating moment for the Cougars but they let it fly when they got the ball back. Chase Spieker hooked up with Jack Follmann down the seem for 61-yards and touchdown with just 11 seconds left in he half. Austin Williams added the 2-point conversion and CAM was back within 4 at 30-26 at the break.

The Cougars got the ball to start the second half and hit another bomb on the first play of the half. Spieker connected with Sam Foreman down the right sideline for 65-yards and a score to give the Cougars their first lead of the night, 34-30 after the conversion. Baxter responded well with a 19-play drive that took nearly eight minutes off the game clock, capping it off with a 15 yard touchdown run from Cody Damman. They converted the two-point try and went up 38-34. CAM shut the Bolts out the rest of the way. Sam Foreman started to get consistent pressure in the Bolts’ backfield and the tide turned to the Cougars. Follmann ripped off a 67-yard rushing score to put the Cougars back in front for good on the second play of the fourth quarter. Follmann added another rushing score and Sam Foreman hauled in a touchdown pass with 1:21 left to put a bow on a hard-fought win.

Jack Follmann had a monster game with 113 yards and 4 rushing touchdowns to go along with 98 yards receiving and another score. Chase Spieker had an efficient night at quarterback going 12-16 for 296 yards and three touchdowns. Sam Foreman had 177 receiving yards and two touchdowns. The Cougars improved to 7-2 on the season and will now await their 2nd round match-up.

Baxter was led by 32-48 passing for 350 yards and three touchdowns from Cody Damman. He also racked up 133 yards and 1 touchdown on the ground. He spent some time out of the game after taking multiple big hits in the third quarter but did come back in later in a gutty effort. The Bolts end their season at 7-2.
