NEWTON, Iowa — The Newton Police Department has confirmed a child died at a home day care on Friday. KCCI reports Police said they were called to the home in the 700 block of East 12th Street Place North at about 11:11 a.m. A 5-month-old was reported unconscious and not breathing. First responders attempted to revive the infant. The child was taken to MercyOne Newton, but rescue efforts were unsuccessful.

Authorities said the child was napping before they were found unresponsive. Officials assisted the day care in sending the other children home to their families. Law enforcement is continuing to investigate. The State Medical Examiner has scheduled an autopsy.
