Atlantic roars into the Regional Final with 10-0 win over Cherokee

The Atlantic Trojans softball team will play for a trip to State on Monday night in the Regional Final after dispatching of Cherokee, Washington 10-0 in 5 innings of play on Friday. The Trojans executed a great early double play and then brought home 4 runs in the bottom of the first. Kennedy Goergen drove in 2 with a single and Jada Jensen and Lauren Nicholas got one run in each by putting the ball in play. The Trojans went on to add 3 in the 2nd, 1 in the 4th, and 2 in the 5th to seal the early win.

Kennedy Goergen drove in four runs to lead the way at the plate. Atlantic Head Coach Terry Hinzmann said she has been playing well in the 5th spot in the order.

Goergen said she was just focusing on putting the ball in play.

Olivia Engler had another stellar outing in the circle for the Trojans with 11 strikeouts and allowing just 3 hits. Coach Hinzmann thought she flustered the Braves throughout.

Third baseman Jada Jensen said the staff prepared them well for what Cherokee was going to bring.

Cherokee ended their season with a record of 3-19. Atlantic improved to 32-5 on the season and now are in the spot they hoped to be when the season started. Hosting a Regional Final with a chance to punch their ticket to State. Goergen said they are very excited for the opportunity.

The Trojans will face MOC-Floyd Valley in that Class 3A Region 2 Final on Monday. The Dutchmen beat Okoboji 2-1 on Friday evening to advance. We’ll have coverage on KJAN with pregame at 6:45 p.m. on Monday.
