Iowa COVID-19 update for 1/11/21: Hospitalization numbers fluctuating; 1 additional death in Cass County

The Iowa Department of Public Health today as (of 10 a.m., Monday), said there have been 425 new, confirmed cases of COVID-19 in test results received since 10-a.m. Sunday, for a pandemic total to-date, of 296,865.  There was also one additional death, for a total of 4,139. The death was reported in a Cass County resident, bringing the pandemic total here, to 41. Of those 41 deaths, 39 were due to underlying causes and for two, COVID was a contributing factor. Of Iowa’s pandemic-related deaths, COVID-19 is reported as the underlying cause for 3,792 deaths, and a contributing factor to 347 deaths.

The Iowa DPH says (as of Monday) there are 86 COVID-19 outbreaks at long-term care facilities in the state (4 less than Sunday). Those outbreaks account for 1,998 of Iowa’s current positive cases. COVID-19 outbreaks at long-term care facilities account for 1,680 of the state’s total deaths. Health officials say 959 LTC patients/staff have recovered from the virus.

Hospitalization numbers are fluctuating. As of Sunday, there were 549 hospitalized. Today, that number is 555. The IDPH says there are: 96 patients in an ICU (9 less than Sunday); 74 were admitted to hospitals (compared to 72 yesterday), and 36 patients are on ventilators, compared to 41, Sunday. The numbers in western/southwest Iowa (RMCC Region 4), show there are: 40 hospitalized (compared to 43 yesterday); 15 are in an ICU (3 less than yesterday); 6 people were admitted to a hospital (1 less than Sunday), and 9 people are on a ventilator (unchanged from Sunday).

According to the state’s website, 1,396,433 Iowans have been tested for COVID-19, to-date. Iowa’s average reported positivity rate for the last 14-days declined slightly, from 14.7% Sunday, to 14.6%, today.  The health department says 256,149 Iowans have recovered from COVID-19.
